Professor Hyung Woo Kim's research lab specializes in clinical and translational research focusing on chronic kidney disease (CKD), inflammatory biomarkers in pancreatic cancer, and the impact of dietary factors on cardiometabolic and renal health. The lab also investigates environmental health impacts, such as extreme weather events and their health consequences, and applies machine learning to improve clinical outcomes in hemodialysis patients. Their work bridges epidemiology, nephrology, oncology, and public health with a strong emphasis on predictive modeling and real-world data analysis.

15Low urinary potassium excretion is associated with progression of CKD.
Several reports showed that interleukin-6 (IL-6) or -8 (IL-8) might be useful inflammatory biomarkers for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), although these clinical impact is still open to debate. The aim of this study was to elucidate whether serum levels of IL-6 and IL-8 at diagnosis could predict the tumor progression pattern of PDAC, especially in extensive hepatic metastasis.According to the tumor burden of hepatic metastasis at the last follow-up, tumor progression pattern was define
Abstract A heavy rainfall event induced by mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) occurred over the middle Korean Peninsula from 25 to 27 July 1996. This heavy rainfall caused a large loss of life and property damage as a result of flash floods and landslides. An observational study was conducted using Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) data from 0930 UTC 26 July to 0303 UTC 27 July 1996. Dominant synoptic features in this case had many similarities to those in previous studies, such
Importance: An increasing body of evidence indicates an association between consuming sugar or its alternatives and cardiometabolic diseases. However, the effects of the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages, and natural juices on kidney health remain unclear. Objective: To investigate the association of the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, artificially sweetened beverages, and natural juices with the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and the effect o
Dialysis adequacy is an important survival indicator in patients with chronic hemodialysis. However, there are inconveniences and disadvantages to measuring dialysis adequacy by blood samples. This study used machine learning models to predict dialysis adequacy in chronic hemodialysis patients using repeatedly measured data during hemodialysis. This study included 1333 hemodialysis sessions corresponding to the monthly examination dates of 61 patients. Patient demographics and clinical parameter
Previous studies reported increased incidence of gallstone formation after gastrectomy. However, there were few reports about factors other than surgical technique. The purpose of this study is to investigate the spectrum of risk factors of gallstone formation after gastrectomy. From June 2003 to December 2008, 1480 patients who underwent gastrectomy due to gastric cancer but had no gallstones before surgery were identified. Electronic medical records were retrospectively reviewed. Gallstones we
Few studies have evaluated the presence of hepatic or peritoneal metastasis as a prognostic factor in patients with metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic value of the initial metastatic, extrahepatic, or hepatic site in patients with metastatic PDAC. Between January 2007 and December 2013, the medical records of 343 patients with metastatic PDAC treated at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital were retrospectively reviewed. Patients
Vitamin C is an essential water-soluble nutrient which primarily exerts its effect on host defense mechanisms and immune homeostasis, but the mechanism related to immune-potentiation is poorly understood. Since dendritic cells (DCs) are known as a potent antigen presenting cell (APC) that could enhance the antigen specific immune responses, we investigate the effects of vitamin C on activation of DCs and its related mechanism by using dendritic cell lines, DC-1. First, we found that there was no
Objective: Previously developed Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) prediction models utilize clinical variables with potential privacy protection issues. We developed an IDH prediction model using minimal variables, without the risk of privacy infringement. Methods: Unidentifiable data from 63,640 hemodialysis sessions (26,746 of 79 patients for internal validation, 36,894 of 255 patients for external validation) from two Korean hospital hemodialysis databases were finally analyzed, using three IDH
INTRODUCTION: Improvement in life expectancy has increased the number of very elderly patients undergoing hemodialysis. However, it is not clear which quality measures for hemodialysis should be employed in this population. Therefore, in this paper we investigated the association between major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) indicators of hemodialysis quality in very elderly patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data regarding a total of 29,692 patients undergoing maintenance
These results provide evidence of a clear association between low serum sodium and new-onset CV events after dialysis initiation in PD patients. Whether the correction of hyponatremia for this indication provides additional protection for the development of CV disease in these patients remains to be addressed in interventional studies.
