Professor Il Young Oh's research lab specializes in cardiovascular regeneration and precision medicine, focusing on endothelial progenitor cells, neovascularization mechanisms, and the role of molecular markers like E-selectin in vascular repair. The lab investigates pharmacogenomics, particularly the impact of CYP2C19 polymorphisms on antiplatelet therapy response in East Asian patients with drug-eluting stents. Additionally, the lab applies deep learning to electrocardiographic signal analysis for improved cardiac arrhythmia classification. A key theme across projects is the translation of basic cellular and molecular insights into clinical outcomes and diagnostic tools.

15BACKGROUND: Two types of cells are cultured from the human peripheral blood, early endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) and outgrowth endothelial cells (OECs), as previously reported. Here, we further characterize these cells, especially with respect to their different origins and functions both in vitro and in vivo. E-selectin plays critical roles in tethering leukocytes to endothelial cells (ECs). We studied the role of E-selectin in endothelial progenitor cell (EPC) homing and vasculogenesis. After ischemia, the expression of E-selectin on ECs peaked 6 to 12 hours and returned to baseline at 24 hours, whereas the level of soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) in serum increased over 24 hours and remained high at day 7. We concluded that the 152-layer SE-ResNet trained by fusion of single-lead ECGs had better classification performance than the 152-layer SE-ResNet trained on only single-lead ECG data, regardless of the single-lead ECG signal type. We also found that the best performance directions for single-lead ECG classification are Lead -aVR and II.
