Professor In Ho Park's research lab specializes in microbial pathogenesis, with a primary focus on Streptococcus pneumoniae, particularly the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying pneumococcal capsule diversity and virulence. The lab investigates the biochemical and genetic basis of serotype variation, including the identification of novel serotypes (e.g., 6C) and hybrid serotypes resulting from mutations in glycosyltransferases like WciP. They also explore the pathogenesis of non-typeable pneumococci, especially those with defective or absent capsules, using molecular typing and comparative genomics. Additionally, the lab contributes to translational research by examining host-pathogen interactions and host responses in infection, including the role of hypoxia and Hif-1α in mesenchymal stromal cell function.
