Professor Ja Kyung Kim's research lab specializes in liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) research, with a strong focus on noninvasive diagnostic methods, interventional therapies, and regenerative approaches for chronic liver disease. The lab investigates elastography-based techniques such as liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and spleen-platelet ratio (LSPS) to improve risk stratification and reduce unnecessary endoscopies in patients with liver cirrhosis. It also explores innovative local ablative therapies, including holmium-166/chitosan complex injection for small HCC, and evaluates the clinical and pathological impact of autologous bone marrow cell infusion in advanced liver cirrhosis. Additionally, the lab investigates viral factors, particularly HBV genotypes and mutations, in relation to HCC development in endemic populations.

15LSPS is a reliable, noninvasive method for detection of HEVs. Patients with LSPS<3.5 may avoid endoscopy safely, whereas those with LSPS>5.5 should be considered for appropriate prophylactic treatments.
Different cutoff LSM values according to ALT level and combination with age-spleen-platelet ratio index can enhance the performance of LSM in CHB, regardless of ALT level.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term tumor response after phase IIb clinical study and the safety of percutaneous holmium-166 ((166)Ho)/chitosan complex injection (PHI) therapy for small hepatocellular carcinoma as a local ablative treatment. (166)Ho is a radioactive isotope derived from natural holmium-165. We developed a (166)Ho/chitosan complex (Milican, Dong Wha Pharmaceutical Co., Seoul, Korea) using chitosan as a vehicle to retain the radioactive material within
Several clinical trials of bone marrow cell infusion in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) have shown clinical improvement, despite conflicting results from animal models. We investigated serial pathological features and the clinical impact after autologous bone marrow infusion (ABMI) in patients with advanced LC. Ten patients with advanced LC due to chronic hepatitis B virus infection underwent ABMI. Serological tests, MRI, and liver biopsies were performed, and quality of life was assessed by
Recently, hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes and mutations have been reported to be related to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This cross-sectional case-control study examined the relationship between HCC and mutations in the enhancer II/core promoter and precore regions of HBV by comparing 135 Korean HCC patients infected with HBV genotype C2 (HBV/C2; HCC group) with 135 age-, sex-, and hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) status-matched patients without HCC (non- HCC group). Age and sex were also matc
Our data show that surveillance ≤ 6 months might be associated with early detection of HCC and improved survival in a hepatitis B endemic area.
Electronic structure of the In-adsorbed $\text{Si}(111)\sqrt{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{3}\text{-Au}$ surface was investigated by core-level and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. On the $\text{Si}(111)\sqrt{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{3}\text{-Au}$ surface, In adsorbates were reported to remove the characteristic domain-wall network and produce a very well-ordered $\sqrt{3}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\sqrt{3}$ surface phase. Detailed band dispersions a
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a prototypical infectious disease of cirrhotic patients. It has been suggested that cirrhotic patients' response to infection is less effective because of differences in the inflammatory and immune reactions. This study aimed to investigate the expression of the inflammatory cytokines monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) in cirrhotic patients with SBP. The MCP1 and IL-10 levels in the sera and ascitic fluids of cirrhotic pat
BACKGROUND AND AIM: The increasing prevalence of cholesterol gallstone (CG) disease has become an economic burden to the healthcare system. Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is the only established medical agent used to dissolve gallstones. In investigating novel therapeutics for CG, we assessed the preventive effects of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3PUFA) on the formation of CG induced by feeding a lithogenic diet (LD) containing high cholesterol levels to mice. METHODS: Mice were divided into
Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) can progress into liver cirrhosis; however, no definite treatment is available. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (omega-3) has been reported to alleviate experimental NASH, although its beneficial effect was not evident when tested clinically. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the additive effect of omega-3 and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) on diet-induced NASH in mice. C57BL/6 mice were given a high-fat diet (HFD) for 24 weeks, at which point the mice wer
Primary splenic lymphoma (PSL) is often defined as generalized lymphoma with splenic involvement as the dominant feature. It is a rare disease that comprises approximately 1% of all malignant lymphomas. We investigated three cases of non-Hodgkin's splenic lymphoma that had different clinical features on presentation. The patients' survival times from diagnosis ranged from 59 to 143 months, without evidence of relapse after splenectomy and chemotherapy, with or without radiotherapy. This data sug
BACKGROUND: Kruppel-like-factor (KLF) 10 is identified as transforming growth factor (TGF) β inducible early gene and is reported to suppress lipogenic genes. Although previous studies report that TGFβ plays an important role in progression of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) by regulating liver fibrosis, the association of KLF10 and NASH has never been explored. Thus we evaluated expressions and changes of KLF10 in diet induced NASH and in NASH which was alleviated by ursodeoxycholic acid (U

Although several human clinical trials using various bone marrow-derived cell types for cirrhotic or decompensated patients have reported a short-term benefit, long-term follow-up data are limited. We analyzed the long-term clinical outcomes of autologous bone marrow cell infusion (ABMI) for decompensated liver cirrhosis (LC). Patients enrolled in a pilot single-armed ABMI study were followed up more than 5 years. Bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BM-MNCs) from decompensated LC were harvest
Transient elastography (TE) has been used as a non-invasive method for liver stiffness measurement (LSM) in patients with chronic liver disease. This study was performed to assess the change of LSM by TE and to assess its clinical usefulness during long-term oral antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). We retrospectively reviewed 83 CHB patients. The mean interval between two LSM was 411.5 ± 149.5 days. Initial and follow-up LSM was 16.15 ± 12.41 kPa and 11.26 ± 7.36 kPa, r
