Professor Jae Eun Oh's research lab specializes in the durability and microstructural evolution of cementitious materials, particularly focusing on chloride binding mechanisms in alkali-activated materials such as fly ash and slag-based systems. The lab investigates the formation of chloride-bearing phases, including zeolites and ettringite, and their role in immobilizing chlorides—critical for enhancing the long-term performance of concrete in aggressive environments like seawater exposure. Advanced characterization techniques such as STXM, XANES, and XRD are employed to study phase transformations and ion exchange processes at the nanoscale. The lab’s work contributes significantly to the development of sustainable, chloride-resistant construction materials.

15This study aimed to investigate the chloride-binding capacity of alkali-activated fly ash (denoted as FSW) and slag (denoted as SSW) samples and their synthesized Cl-bearing phases, which are capable of binding and immobilizing chloride when seawater is used as the mixing water.
