Professor Jaebum Park's research lab specializes in clinical and translational research in liver and kidney transplantation, with a focus on improving surgical outcomes, reducing post-transplant complications, and developing strategies for immune tolerance and viral infection management. The lab investigates risk factors for biliary strictures in living donor liver transplantation, evaluates innovative surgical techniques such as intermittent hepatic inflow occlusion, and explores immunomodulatory regimens to achieve donor-specific tolerance. Additionally, the lab conducts prospective studies on viral infections—particularly parvovirus B19 and hepatitis B—among transplant recipients, aiming to optimize antiviral prophylaxis and vaccination protocols.

15BACKGROUND: Duct-to-duct (DD) anastomosis is an accepted procedure for biliary reconstruction in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT). However, biliary complication rates in LDLT recipients have been reported to be as high as 20% to 30% or more. In this study, we examined various potential risk factors for biliary stricture (BS) that occurs in the context of DD reconstruction in a single-active transplant center. METHODS: Enrolled in this study were adults who underwent their first LDLT wit
In patients with symptomatic P-AVM, surgical resection of the affected pancreas showed a successful result. When a patient is at a high risk for surgical treatment, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, transarterial embolization, and radiation therapy might be other treatment options.
To evaluate the effects of intermittent hepatic inflow occlusion (IHIO) during donor hepatectomy for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in recipients and donors, we performed a single-center, open-label, prospective, parallel, randomized controlled study. Adult donor-recipient pairs undergoing LDLT with right hemiliver grafts were randomized into IHIO and control groups (1:1). In the IHIO group, IHIO was performed during donor hepatectomy. The primary endpoint was the peak serum alanine a
BACKGROUND: Tolerance induction is an important goal in the field of organ transplantation. We have sequentially modified our conditioning regimen for induction of donor-specific tolerance in recipients of major histocompatibility complex-mismatched combined kidney and bone marrow transplantation (CKBMT). METHODS: From December 2011 to May 2017, 8 major histocompatibility complex-mismatched patients received CKBMT. The initial conditioning regimen (protocol 1) consisted of cyclophosphamide (CP),
This prospective study was designed to investigate the clinically significant level of parvovirus B19 viral load using quantitative real-time (RT) polymerase-chain reaction (PCR) in kidney transplantation (KT) recipients. One hundred forty-three adult recipients who underwent their first KT between November 2003 and October 2005 were enrolled. Six blood samples (the first taken preoperatively, subsequent samples taken every 4 weeks for 20 weeks) were taken from each patient for parvovirus B19 DN
The principal objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccine switch program after 1-year Hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) for the prevention of de novo HBV (DNHBV) infection in pediatric recipients of hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc)-positive grafts. In this study, we enrolled pediatric recipients (n = 14), who had undergone living donor liver transplantation with anti-HBc-positive grafts between July 2000 and July 2005 and were followed up for ov
PURPOSE: Dual kidney transplantation (DKT) offers a way to extend the use of kidneys from expanded criteria donors (ECDs). Here, we compared the outcomes of DKT with those of single kidney transplantation from standard criteria donors (SCDs) and ECDs. METHODS: In 2014, we began performing DKT using both kidneys from deceased donors greater than 70 years of age with one of two risk factors: serum creatinine (sCr) level over 3.0 mg/dl or eGFR under 30 ml/min. By 2017, we had performed 15 DKTs. We
The objective of this study was to compare outcomes between basiliximab and low-dose r-ATG in living donor kidney transplantation recipients with low immunological risk. Patients in the low-dose r-ATG group received 1.5 mg/kg of r-ATG for 3 days (total 4.5 mg/kg). Graft survival, patient survival, acute rejection, de novo donor specific antibody (DSA), estimated glomerular filtration rate (e-GFR) changes, and infection status were compared. Among 268 patients, 37 received r-ATG, and 231 received
Xenotransplantation using pigs' liver offers a potentially alternative method to overcome worldwide donor shortage, or more importantly as a bridge to allotransplantation. However, it has been challenged by profound thrombocytopenia and fatal coagulopathy in non-human primate models. Here we suggest that a left auxiliary technique can be a useful method to achieve extended survival of the xenograft. Fifteen consecutive liver xenotransplants were carried out in a pig-to-cynomolgus model. Right au
Steroids have been a mainstay of immunosuppressive regimens in renal transplantation despite their adverse effects. The introduction of new immunosuppressant has improved the survival rates and prompted trials of steroid withdrawal. We conducted a randomized prospective study to compare steroid withdrawal at 6 months post-transplant between tacrolimus + mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) (FK group) versus cyclosporine A + MMF (CsA group). Steroid was withdrawn at 6 months post-transplant under the cond
