Professor Jaehyeong Kim's research lab focuses on inflammatory lung diseases, with a particular emphasis on the pathophysiological roles of immune cells and proteolytic enzymes such as matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in conditions like ventilator-induced lung injury and bacterial pneumonia. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying neutrophilic inflammation, macrophage function, and tissue remodeling, often using rodent models and clinical samples. Additional research interests include the impact of environmental and therapeutic interventions—such as gamma irradiation and PARP1 modulation—on disease progression and tissue injury. The lab also explores complications from medical and cosmetic procedures, including non-thrombotic pulmonary embolism due to dermal fillers.

ABSTRACT Gamma irradiation was used to reduce the N‐nitrosamines and residual nitrite in model system sausage during storage. Aerobic or vacuum packaged sausage was irradiated at 0, 5,10, 20, and 30 kGy. The residual nitrite levels were significantly reduced by gamma irradiation, and, in vacuum packaging, the reduction was dose dependent.
