Professor Jee Yun Ahn's research lab focuses on the intersection of ophthalmology and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson’s disease (PD). The lab investigates retinal changes as early biomarkers of neurodegeneration, with a strong emphasis on optical coherence tomography (OCT) to assess retinal layer thickness and its correlation with disease progression and dopamine transporter availability. Additional research explores drug-induced ocular toxicity, such as vortex keratopathy from targeted cancer therapies, and surgical outcomes in patients with ocular motility disorders. The lab integrates clinical ophthalmic imaging with neuroimaging and functional assessments to identify non-invasive markers for early neurological disease detection.

15Retinal thinning is present in the early stages of PD, correlates with disease severity, and may be linked to nigral dopaminergic degeneration. Retinal imaging may be useful for detection of pathologic changes occurring in early PD.
Overall IVB PKs in rabbit eyes after vitrectomy without lensectomy are not substantially different from nonvitrectomized control eyes.
Abstract Objectives We investigated retinal change and its relationship with neurodegeneration markers in a prodromal Parkinson cohort. Methods A total of 30 patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder were recruited. Participants underwent olfactory testing, macular optical coherence tomography, microperimetry, contrast sensitivity test, and brain N ‐(3‐[ 18 F]fluoropropyl)‐2‐carbomethoxy‐3‐(4‐iodophenyl) nortropane positron emission tomography. We measured the ganglion
The frontalis sling operation using silicone rod can safely and effectively correct ptosis in chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia patients without serious corneal complications.
This study shows that average RNFL thickness after PRP undergoes early thickening and subsequent progressive thinning throughout the 2 years post-PRP. This temporal change varies according to the peripapillary RNFL quadrant. Our results also indicate that temporal RNFL and foveal thickness have a similar pattern of long-term change after PRP.
We report a case of vortex keratopathy in a patient treated with vandetanib for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). A 44-year-old female who underwent two cycles of chemotherapy for NSCLC complained of visual blurring in both eyes after the initiation of vandetanib, an anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 protein tyrosine kinase inhibitor. On ophthalmic examination, visual acuities were 20 / 20 OU and, with the exception of diffuse v
Bilateral same-day intravitreal injections drawn from a single vial using separate syringes or needles are well tolerated by patients, and its safety profile may be equivalent to unilateral injections. The bacterial molecular surveillance system using eubacterial PCR demonstrated the safety of bilateral same-day intravitreal injections and may be used for safety surveillance and for timely intervention of possible drug-related endophthalmitis.
PURPOSE: To investigate the prevalence and clinical features of ocular abnormalities in patients with cerebral palsy (CP) and the association with gross motor function. METHODS: A complete ophthalmologic examination was performed in 88 consecutive patients with CP before and during orthopedic surgery in a tertiary hospital from July 2008 to March 2010. The prevalence and clinical features of ocular abnormalities and the association with gross motor function state were investigated. RESULTS: Seve
The diagnostic sensitivity was higher for gaze photographs than for the other tests applied to OMG patients.
Abstract Purpose of Review Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients are at significantly increased risks for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular morbidities. Recently, there has been heightened interest in the association of OSA with numerous ocular diseases and possible improvement of these conditions with the initiation of OSA treatment. We reviewed the current evidence with an emphasis on the overlapping pathogeneses of both diseases. Recent Findings Currently available literature points to a su
We report a case of progressive rod-cone dystrophy caused by a novel mutation in <i>SLC4A7</i>, a gene coding the sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBC3, underscoring the importance of ion homeostasis for photoreceptor function and maintenance.
Objective To investigate the relationship between choroidal thickness and myopia by analyzing change in choroidal thickness over time in children with myopia progression. Design Retrospective cohort study. Participants Children with myopia. Methods Spherical equivalent (SE), axial length, and choroidal thickness were measured every 2 years during course of 4 years in children with myopia enrolled in a prospective cohort study. Choroidal thickness was evaluated at 13 points on the ETDRS grid, and
