Professor Jeong Yoon Choi's research lab specializes in clinical and translational neuroscience, with a primary focus on central vestibular disorders, particularly central positional nystagmus and its differentiation from peripheral causes like benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. The lab investigates the neuro-ophthalmological and neuro-otological mechanisms underlying nystagmus patterns, vestibular reflex function (e.g., head impulse test), and the role of cerebellar and brainstem pathology in vertigo syndromes. Additionally, the lab explores biomarkers such as free fatty acids (FFA) in cardioembolic stroke, aiming to improve risk prediction and outcomes in cerebrovascular disease. Their work bridges clinical neurology, vestibular physiology, and stroke neurology through rigorous observational and registry-based studies.

15CPPN may be ascribed to enhanced responses of the vestibular afferents due to lesions involving the nodulus and uvula. CPPN could be differentiated from benign paroxysmal positional nystagmus by positional nystagmus induced in multiple planes, temporal patterns of nystagmus intensity, and associated neurologic findings suggestive of central pathologies.
Here we characterize persistent apogeotropic type of central positional nystagmus, and compare it with the apogeotropic nystagmus of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo involving the lateral canal. Nystagmus was recorded in 27 patients with apogeotropic type of central positional nystagmus (22 with unilateral and five with diffuse cerebellar lesions) and 20 patients with apogeotropic nystagmus of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. They were tested while sitting, while supine with the head st
The head impulse test (HIT) is used to evaluate the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during a high-velocity head rotation. Corrective catch-up saccades that occur during or after the HITs usually indicate peripheral vestibular hypofunction, whereas in acute vestibular syndrome, normal clinical (bedside) HITs should prompt a search for a central lesion. However, recent quantitative studies that evaluated HITs using magnetic search coils or video-based techniques have demonstrated that specific patte
Medulloblastoma is the most common embryonal tumor of the central nervous system in childhood. Combined multimodality approaches, including surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, have improved the outcome of medulloblastoma. Advances in genomic research have shown that medulloblastoma is not a biologically or clinically discrete entity. Previously, the risk was divided according to histology, presence of metastasis, degree of resection, and age at diagnosis. Through the development of integrated
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review considers recent advances in central vertigo in terms of clinical and laboratory features and pathophysiology. RECENT FINDINGS: Strokes presenting dizziness-vertigo are more likely to be associated with a misdiagnosis in the emergency setting. The risk of future strokes after discharge is higher in patients diagnosed with peripheral vertigo than in control patients. Strokes and transient ischemic attacks account for one-quarter of acute transient vestibular syndrom
In this retrospective registry-based observational study, CE stroke seemed to be associated with elevated plasma level of FFA. In addition, the present study suggested that an elevated FFA concentration could be a useful indicator for predicting recurrent stroke in CE stroke patients.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the potential benefits of statin therapy on mortality and stroke recurrence after cardioembolic stroke. METHODS: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed data from 535 patients with first-ever cardioembolic stroke. Patients were classified into nonstatin, low-potency statin, and high-potency statin groups. The primary outcomes were time to mortality and time to recurrent stroke. RESULTS: The mean duration of fol
This study suggests that LVWMA, even when unassociated with high-risk cardioembolic sources, could be an independent predictor for stroke recurrence in patients with ischemic stroke.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether baseline plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentration is associated with any (ischemic/hemorrhagic) stroke, ischemic stroke/systemic embolism (ISSE), or ischemic stroke among stroke survivors with atrial fibrillation (A-fib). Moreover, we compared the outcome predictability of FFA with previously adopted models, including the CHADS2 and CHA2 DS2 -VASc scoring systems. METHODS: We analyzed data from 279 stroke patients with A-fib and investigated the association b
Pentafluorophenyl end-capped poly(ethylene glycol) (PF-PEG-PF) aqueous solution shows a lower critical solution temperature (LCST), which is sensitive to the type of gases dissolved in the solution. LCST increases from 24.5 to 26 °C when dissolved carbon dioxide is replaced by oxygen. The transparent-to-turbid transition is reversibly observed when the dissolved carbon dioxide in the PF-PEG-PF aqueous solution is exchanged with oxygen, and vice versa, at 24.5 °C. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review will cover the recent advances in clinical and laboratory features, pathophysiology, and treatment of central vestibular disorders. RECENT FINDINGS: Several features and mechanisms of central nystagmus have been identified over the years. Application of head impulse tests and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials has expanded our understanding of altered processing of canal-driven and otolith-driven vestibular signals in lesions involving the central vestibular str
