Professor Jeongyeol Cha's research lab specializes in digital orthodontics, implant biomechanics, and advanced dental materials. The lab focuses on developing and evaluating digital technologies such as deep learning for automated tooth segmentation, micro-CT and spectrophotometry for aligner characterization, and finite element analysis for implant stability and stress distribution. Key research directions include optimizing orthodontic treatment outcomes through precision digital modeling, improving the mechanical and optical properties of clear aligners, and assessing the long-term performance of orthodontic mini-implants and ceramic brackets.

15Implants placed with high insertion torque (IT) typically exhibit primary stability, which enables early loading. Whether high IT has a negative impact on peri-implant bone health, however, remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to ascertain how peri-implant bone responds to strains and stresses created when implants are placed with low and high IT. Titanium micro-implants were inserted into murine femurs with low and high IT using torque values that were scaled to approximate t
This study evaluates the accuracy and efficiency of automatic tooth segmentation in digital dental models using deep learning. We developed a dynamic graph convolutional neural network (DGCNN)-based algorithm for automatic tooth segmentation and classification using 516 digital dental models. We segmented 30 digital dental models using three methods for comparison: (1) automatic tooth segmentation (AS) using the DGCNN-based algorithm from LaonSetup software, (2) landmark-based tooth segmentation
The present study compared the thickness and gap width of thermoformed and 3D-printed clear aligners (CAs) using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and evaluated their translucency using spectrophotometer. Four groups of CAs were tested: thermoformed with polyethylene terephthalate glycol (TS) or copolyester-elastomer combination (TM), and 3D-printed TC-85 cleaned with alcohol (PA) or with centrifuge (PC). CIELab coordinates were measured (n = 10) to evaluate translucency. CAs (n = 10) were fi
OBJECTIVE: To compare the level of friction resistance (FR) of conventional and silica-insert ceramic brackets using various bracket-wire combinations and angulations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four types of ceramic brackets were examined: (1) polycrystalline alumina bracket (PCA-C), (2) polycrystalline alumina bracket with a stainless steel (SS) slot (PCA-M), (3) polycrystalline alumina bracket with a silica layer (PCA-S), and (4) monocrystalline sapphire bracket (MCS). A conventional SS bracket w
PURPOSE: This study compared the insertion and removal torque of tapered and cylindric orthodontic miniscrews. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six miniscrews were placed into the buccal alveolar bone of the mandible in six male beagle dogs. Maximum insertion torque was measured during placement of 48 miniscrews, and the maximum removal torque was recorded after 3 and 12 weeks of loading. After 4 months of healing, 48 additional miniscrews were implanted in almost the same place as the first set of
Objective . We investigated the suitability of intraoral-scan models for measuring tooth dimensions and the amount of crowding in patients with severe tooth crowding. Materials and Methods . Fifty-eight patients who had undergone intraoral scans for diagnosis were included. Cast models were divided into two groups depending on the amount of crowding, as determined by initial caliper-based measurements (mild crowding [MC] group: <3.0 mm; severe crowding [SC] group: >4.5 mm). Twenty maxillar
Based on three-dimensional scanning and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques, customized bracket systems are increasingly used. However, data remain limited regarding customized bracket design, characteristics, and stability. This study was undertaken to evaluate the design, bond strength, and residual adhesives of four different CAD/CAM customized brackets that were attached to human tooth specimens by indirect bonding. Thirty extracted human upper premola
PURPOSE: The recent use of microcomputed tomography (microCT) has made it possible to analyze qualitative bone morphology at the implant surface and in the peri-implant region. The purpose of this study was to evaluate histomorphometric changes around the implant-bone interface after placement of mini-implants using three-dimensional microCT analysis and to compare the stability of the implants after immediate and early loads were applied. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight orthodontic mini-impl
