Professor John Ames's research lab specializes in integrating long-term ecological field studies with advanced genomics to investigate the evolutionary processes shaping natural populations. The lab focuses on understanding how dispersal, gene flow, genetic drift, and natural selection interact to shape genetic structure and allele frequency dynamics in wild populations, using the Florida Scrub-Jay as a model system. By combining detailed pedigree data with high-throughput genomic analyses, the lab develops and applies novel statistical and bioinformatic methods to address fundamental questions in population genetics and evolutionary biology. Additionally, the lab contributes to materials science by studying nanoscale microstructures and thermoelectric properties in complex chalcogenide materials.
