Professor Jong Kyun Lee's research lab specializes in biliary and pancreaticobiliary diseases, with a focus on the diagnosis, classification, and clinical management of biliary tract neoplasms such as cholangiocarcinoma, intraductal papillary neoplasms (IPN-B), and autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). The lab employs clinical, pathological, and biochemical approaches to identify specific biomarkers—particularly bile acid profiles—for early and accurate differentiation of malignant from benign biliary conditions. Their work also emphasizes prognostic factors and risk stratification in gastrointestinal polyps and pancreaticobiliary cancers.

15Gastric and intestinal types of IPN-B have similar clinical characteristics compared with the pancreaticobiliary type, which has a worse prognosis.
EBD was associated with a higher risk of procedure-related complications than PTBD. These complications were managed properly without severe morbidity; however, in the PTBD group, there were two cases of cancer dissemination along the catheter tract.
Among 67 cases of AIP, either IgG or IgG4 was elevated in 76% of patients, and 14 patients (21%) had other organ involvement. New Korean diagnostic criteria are useful for diagnosis of AIP.

Patient's age (>60 y) and large polyp size (>10 mm) were significant predictive factors for neoplastic GB polyps. GB polyps less than 10 mm in diameter do not require surgical intervention simply because they grow.
