研究室紹介

Professor Jong Min Kim's research lab specializes in translational biomedical engineering and clinical physiology, focusing on vascular hemodynamics, implantable biomaterials, and urological disorders related to benign prostatic hyperplasia. The lab investigates vascular access complications, including arterial thrombosis during cannulation, and explores innovative scaffold designs for bone regeneration using hydroxyapatite/alumina composites. Additionally, the lab examines the clinical implications of obesity on prostate health and explores novel xenotransplantation strategies for diabetes using porcine islets, with an emphasis on immunosuppressive safety and long-term graft survival.

Pulse Oximetry and Circulatory Kinetics Associated with Pulse Volume Amplitude Measured by Photoelectric Plethysmography

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

Through a catheter placed in a superficial vein on the finger, we observed a pulsatile venous pressure. To delineate the relationship between the pulsatile venous pressure and the pulse volume amplitude (PVA) recorded by photoelectric plethysmography (PEPG), both tracings were simultaneously recorded. When the PVA changed acutely or gradually, the venous pulse pressure and mean venous pressure simultaneously followed the same trend. We also found that mean PVO2 (135 mm Hg) was greater when the P

Arterial Cannulation

Wrist arteries of 100 patients were percutaneously cannulated with 20-gauge cannulas; pulse-wave recordings and changes in arterial-pressure wave configuration were then used to determine whether a cannulated artery was patent of occluded. At the time of decannulation, 23 of the 100 arteries were thrombosed. Of the three cannula types used in the study, the tapered Medicut was most frequently related to occlusion. Age of patient, trauma to the artery, and duration of the cannulation were not rel

Korean journal of urologyOA

PURPOSE: We examined the correlation between body mass index (BMI) as a marker of obesity and prostate-specific antigen (PSA), prostate volume (PV), and International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2008 to December 2008, we examined 258 patients diagnosed with BPH. Patients taking 5α-reductase inhibitors or those diagnosed with prostate cancer were excluded from this study. BPH was defined as PV≥25 ml and IPS

SJR Q2Xenotransplantation

BACKGROUND: Although pancreatic islet transplantation is becoming an effective therapeutic option for patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D) who suffer from a substantially impaired awareness of hypoglycemia, its application is limited due to the lack of donors. Thus, pig-to-human islet xenotransplantation has been regarded as a promising alternative due to the unlimited number of "donor organs." Long-term xenogeneic islet graft survival in pig-to-non-human primate (NHP) models has mainly been achi

Bone Regeneration of Hydroxyapatite/Alumina Bilayered Scaffold with 3 mm Passage-Like Medullary Canal in Canine Tibia Model

SJR Q2BioMed Research InternationalOA

The aim of this study was to evaluate the bone regeneration of hydroxyapatite (HA)/alumina bilayered scaffold with a 3 mm passage-like medullary canal in a beagle tibia model. A porous HA/alumina scaffold was fabricated using a polymeric template-coating technique. HA/alumina scaffold dimensions were 10 mm in outer diameter, 20 mm in length, and with either a 3 mm passage or no passage. A 20 mm segmental defect was induced using an oscillating saw through the diaphysis of the beagle tibia. The d

Marjolin's ulcer: immunohistochemical study of 17 cases and comparison with common squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma
Jong Min Kim, W. P. Daniel Su, Paul J. Kurtin, Steve Ziesmer
SJR Q2Journal of Cutaneous Pathology

Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of 17 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of Marjolin's ulcer (SCC-MU), 6 cases of common SCC (SCC), and 5 cases of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) were stained with three monoclonal antikeratin antibodies (CAM 5.2, MAK-6, and MA-903), a monoclonal antivimentin antibody (V9), and a polyclonal anticarcinoembryonic antigen antiserum (A115). Neoplastic cells of SCC-MU, SCC, and BCC showed consistently negative staining for CAM 5.2. A wide range of reactivi

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) model using streptozotocin (STZ) which induces chemical ablation of β cell in the pancreas has been widely used for various research purposes in non-human primates. However, STZ has been known to have a variety of adverse effects such as nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, and even mortality. The purpose of this study is to report DM induction by STZ, toxicity associated with STZ and procedure and complication of exogenous insulin treatment for DM management in rhe

JAK3 inhibitor-based immunosuppression in allogeneic islet transplantation in cynomolgus monkeys
Jong Min Kim, Jun‐Seop Shin, Byoung‐Hoon Min, Seong‐Jun Kang, Il-Hee Yoon, Hyunwoo Chung, Jiyeon Kim, Eung‐Soo Hwang, Jongwon Ha, Chung‐Gyu Park
SJR Q3IsletsOA

Islet transplantation is efficacious to prevent severe hypoglycemia and glycemic liability of selected patients of type 1 diabetes. However, since calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) causes β-cell and nephrotoxicity, alternative drug(s) with similar potency and safety profile to CNI will be highly desirable. Here we tested whether JAK3 inhibitor, tofacitinib could be used instead of tacrolimus in CIT07 immunosuppression regimen in cynomolgus nonhuman primate (NHP) model. Five independent streptozotocin

Duration of Bupivacaine Intradermal Anesthesia When the Bupivacaine Is Mixed with Chloroprocaine

SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

In a double-blind trial in 20 human volunteers, the duration of intradermal anesthesia with a mixture of bupivacaine, 0.5 mg, and chloroprocaine, 3 mg, was compared with the duration of intradermal anesthesia obtained with either bupivacaine, 0.5 mg, or chloroprocaine, 3 mg, alone. The duration of intradermal anesthesia produced by the bupivacaine mixed with chloroprocaine, 36 +/- 16 (mean +/- 1 SD) minutes, was significantly less than the duration of the same amount of bupivacaine alone, 139 +/

SJR Q2Journal of Medical Primatology

BACKGROUND: Many anesthetics have been shown to impair glucose metabolism and cause hyperglycemia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of propofol on glucose metabolism and insulin secretion during intravenous glucose tolerance test (IVGTT) in rhesus monkey. METHODS: Serum cortisol, blood glucose, insulin, and C-peptide concentrations during IVGTT were measured in four rhesus monkeys under either conscious state or propofol anesthesia. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The levels of serum c

Sympathetic Recovery Following Lumbar Epidural and Spinal Analgesia
Jong Min Kim, ANTHONY D. LaSALLE, Ray T. Parmley
SJR Q1Anesthesia & Analgesia

During recovery from spinal and epidural block, the progressive reduction of digital blood flow is regarded as evidence of sympathetic recovery of the extremity. This was demostrated by the decreasing amplitude of a digital pulse-wave (photoelectric plethysmographic) recording. As the level of analgesia regressed to T8-11 following spinal or epidural block, the toe pulse-wave amplitudes began to decrease. In the presence of good motor and sensory block in the lower extremity with low spinal or e
