Professor Joo-Yeon Lee's research lab focuses on understanding the pathogenesis and clinical management of infectious diseases, particularly emerging viral infections such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), as well as metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and Parkinson’s disease. The lab investigates the roles of oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammatory pathways in disease progression, with a strong emphasis on identifying endogenous and exogenous protective mechanisms—such as the Nrf2/ARE pathway and natural compounds like morin. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical innovation through the development and validation of early warning scoring systems, such as the Dynamic Early Warning Score (DEWS), to improve patient safety in healthcare settings.

Our study showed that DEWS was superior to MEWS in three key aspects (IHCA predictive, alarming, and timeliness performance). This study demonstrates the potential of DEWS as an effective, efficient screening tool in rapid response systems (RRSs) to identify high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare workers' mobile phones are easily contaminated with pathogenic bacteria and could be vehicles of transmission. Smart phones are increasingly used in the hospital. The objective of this study was to compare the contamination rate of bacteria with pathogenic potential between smart phones and non-smart phones. METHODS: We screened mobile phones of healthcare workers in three teaching hospitals in South Korea. The identification of cultivated micro-organisms and assessment of

Efforts to detect patient deterioration early have led to the development of early warning score (EWS) models. However, these models are disease-nonspecific and have shown variable accuracy in predicting unexpected critical events. Here, we propose a simpler and more accurate method for predicting risk in respiratory ward patients. This retrospective study analyzed adult patients who were admitted to the respiratory ward and detected using the rapid response system (RRS). Study outcomes included

Although family satisfaction is an important indicator for quality improvement of intensive care units (ICUs), few studies have translated family satisfaction data into quality improvement in Asia. A prospective multicenter study was conducted to evaluate family satisfaction regarding the care of patients and their family. The family satisfaction in the ICU (FS-ICU) questionnaire was administered from January 2015 to February 2016 at ICUs of 3 tertiary teaching hospitals in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: Retrospective studies have demonstrated that the deep learning-based cardiac arrest risk management system (DeepCARS™) is superior to the conventional methods in predicting in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA). This prospective study aimed to investigate the predictive accuracy of the DeepCARS™ for IHCA or unplanned intensive care unit transfer (UIT) among general ward patients, compared with that of conventional methods in real-world practice. METHODS: This prospective, multicenter coh

BACKGROUND: Differentiating cardiogenic pulmonary edema from other bilateral lung diseases such as pneumonia is frequently difficult. We conducted a retrospective study to identify predictors for cardiogenic pulmonary edema and non-cardiogenic causes of bilateral lung infiltrates in chest radiographs. METHODS: The study included patients who had newly developed bilateral lung infiltrates in chest radiographs and patients who underwent echocardiography. Cases were divided into two groups based on

Variability in rapid response system (RRS) characteristics based on the admitted wards is unknown. We aimed to compare differences in the clinical characteristics of RRS activation between patients admitted to medical versus surgical services. We reviewed patients admitted to the hospital who were detected by the RRS from October 2012 to February 2014 at a tertiary care academic hospital. We compared the triggers for RRS activation, interventions performed, and outcomes of the 2 patient groups.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains an unsolved problem in the intensive care unit (ICU), which can be treated with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO). We summarized retrospectively collected data from an institutional experience with VV-ECMO in patients with severe acute respiratory failure and identified the clinical parameters associated with successful ECMO weaning. Among the 45 cases who received ECMO for pneumonia (n = 19), exacerbation of interstitial

YOO JOAN PAEK

SJR Q2Journal of Korean Medical ScienceOA

The evaluation of the quality of a sputum specimen prior to bacterial culture has been an accepted practice. However, optimal sputum criteria for pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) are not well established. We investigated indicators for sputum acceptability in tuberculosis cultures and acid-fast bacilli (AFB) smear. A post-hoc analysis of a randomized trial with 228 sputum specimens from 77 patients was conducted. In the trial, pulmonary TB suspects were requested for collecting three sputum specimens
