Professor Joon-young Kim's research lab specializes in advanced materials and biomedical imaging, with a focus on developing functional nanomaterials for energy applications and innovative image analysis techniques for preclinical diagnostics. The lab investigates transition metal nitrides and spinel-type oxides for electrochemical energy conversion, particularly in nitrogen reduction and supercapacitor technologies, while also pioneering computational methods such as factor analysis and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to enhance small-animal PET imaging and veterinary diagnostic accuracy. The integration of materials science, catalysis, and biomedical image analysis defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach to solving challenges in sustainable energy and precision medicine.

This study was performed to analyze risk factors for and treatment results of ulcerative keratitis. The mean age (±SD) of 32 dogs with ulcerative keratitis was 3.59 (±2.97) years and the most commonly affected breed was the Shih-tzu (50%). Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (31%) was the predominant cause of ulcerative keratitis. To evaluate the potential utility of a self-expandable intratracheal nitinol stent with flared ends for the treatment of tracheal collapse in dogs, endotracheal stenting therapy was performed under fluoroscopic guidance in four dogs with severe tracheal collapse.
