Professor Joong Hee Kim's research lab focuses on epidemiological and clinical studies related to cardiovascular and critical care outcomes, with a strong emphasis on environmental health impacts, sepsis, and hospital-acquired conditions. The lab investigates the long-term effects of air pollution on cardiovascular health, particularly in urban populations like those in Seoul, Korea, and explores biomarkers such as monocyte counts in sepsis to predict mortality and organ dysfunction. Additional research directions include the epidemiology of sepsis, risk factors for adverse outcomes, and the association between vertebral fractures and pneumonia in elderly populations. The lab also examines healthcare system-related risks, such as pressure ulcers in emergency departments linked to prolonged length of stay. These studies are primarily population-based, leveraging national health insurance and screening data for robust, real-world insights.
