Professor Jung Ho Kim's research lab focuses on clinical and translational studies in oral and systemic health, with a strong emphasis on dental biomaterials, periodontal and endodontic treatments, and the impact of chronic diseases on patient outcomes. The lab investigates the application of laser technology—particularly Er:YAG lasers—in improving dental adhesion and enamel resistance, while also exploring the epidemiological trends and risk factors associated with infectious diseases like infective endocarditis and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Additionally, the lab examines the role of body composition and non-communicable diseases in surgical outcomes among patients with HIV and those undergoing major abdominal surgery. Their work bridges dental science, internal medicine, and public health through rigorous clinical and population-based research.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Teeth were polished to make the surface flat. The polished enamel was either etched with 37% phosphoric acid for 30 seconds or ablated with a single 33 J/cm2 pulse from an Er:YAG laser. The control specimens were free from acid etching and laser ablation. Changes in crystal structure, dissolved mi
Objective The treatment of infective endocarditis (IE) has become more complex with the current myriad healthcare-associated factors and the regional differences in causative organisms. We aimed to investigate the overall trends, microbiological features, and outcomes of IE in South Korea. Methods A 12-year retrospective cohort study was performed. Poisson regression was used to estimate the time trends of IE incidence and mortality rate. Risk factors for in-hospital mortality were identified wi
The purpose of this study was to test the effectiveness of an Er:YAG laser in etching the enamel surface for orthodontic treatment. Bovine incisors were either acid-etched or laser-treated. An orthodontic bracket was attached on each treated surface using one-step dentin adhesive and self-curing resin. Tensile bond strength was then evaluated. In addition, the surface morphology of specimens treated with phosphoric acid/laser and self-etching primer, as well as the cross-section of enamel-primer
OBJECTIVES: We aim to compare the trends of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and death among people living with HIV (PLWH) and uninfected controls in South Korea. METHODS: We identified PLWH from a nationwide database of all Korean citizens enrolled from 1 January 2004 to 31 December 2016. A control cohort was randomly selected for PLWH by frequency matching for age and sex in a 20:1 ratio. To compare NCD trends between the groups, adjusted incidence rate ratios for outcomes across ages, calenda
Recent studies have shown that body composition is an important factor that affects surgical site infection (SSI). However, each study has utilized different body composition criteria. Therefore, in this study, we aim to determine the most predictable body composition criteria for the prediction of SSI after gastrectomy. The visceral fat area (VFA), subcutaneous fat area (SFA), and muscle area were assessed by a preoperative-stage computed tomographic (CT) scan. To compare the predictive perform
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in patients with cirrhosis is typically caused by gram-negative bacteria. However, the number of SBP cases due to gram-positive bacteria is steadily increasing. To date, little is known about the predictive factors involved in SBP infections. We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients (>18 years) with SBP due to gram-positive and -negative bacteria who were enrolled from January 2006 to December 2013 at Severance Hospital in Seoul, Korea where th
AIMS: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) remains an important concern. Although spinal TB often has sequelae such as myelopathy after treatment, the predictive factors affecting such unfavourable outcomes are not yet established. We investigated the clinical manifestations and predictors of unfavourable treatment outcomes in patients with spinal TB. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a multicentre retrospective cohort study of patients with spinal TB. Unfavourable outcome was defined according to previous
An electron microscopic study was done on brain biopsy tissue from an eight-month-old female with acute eastern equine encephalitis diagnosed by indirect immunofluorescence. Rare clusters of round virions were found almost exclusively in the extracellular space. All virions observed had spiked envelopes, and their sizes averaged approximately 55 nm. Also found were rare enveloped virions along with degenerate organelles in a membrane-bound structure in the cytoplasm of macrophages. Intracytoplas
Single type air conditioners (STAC) consist of one outdoor unit and one indoor unit. Multi-type air conditioner (MTAC) consist of one compressor in outdoor unit and some indoor units. In this paper, we use the free joint MTAC which can joint six indoor units to one outdoor unit. In the control of the refrigerant distribution, there are three procedures: to measure the pipe pressure of indoor unit; to calculate the amount of the refrigerant for each indoor units accurately, and to analyze the rel
Extrapulmonary nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections contribute to morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, studies about extrapulmonary NTM infections have been limited. Therefore, we aim to describe the diversity of extrapulmonary NTM infections and identify predictors for species. Information regarding diversity of NTM isolates, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, treatment regimens, and outcomes were collected from four tertiary care centers in South Korea. Comparisons were made
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Recurrence is an important late complication of endotherapy of bile duct stones. Endoscopic papillary large balloon dilation (EPLBD) can be used as an alternative method of removing difficult bile duct stones. The aim of this study was to evaluate short term clinical outcomes after removing common bile duct (CBD) stones using EPLBD. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed based on the medical records of 141 patients who received EPLBD, with or without endoscopic sphinctero
