Professor Ki Won Oh's research lab focuses on the molecular and hormonal regulation of bone metabolism, with a particular emphasis on the roles of adipocytokines, osteoprotegerin (OPG), and their genetic polymorphisms in bone mineral density and metabolic bone diseases. The lab investigates the interplay between adipose tissue-derived hormones, insulin resistance, and systemic conditions such as osteoporosis, hypertension, and fatty liver disease in Korean populations. Key research directions include the OPG-RANKL pathway in bone remodeling, the impact of serum adipocytokines on bone health, and the genetic associations of adiponectin and OPG with metabolic and skeletal disorders. The lab integrates clinical epidemiology with molecular biology, using human cohort studies and in vitro models of osteoblast and mesenchymal stem cell differentiation.

Hormonal factors such as sex hormones, insulin, leptin and adiponectin are thought to play a role in the mechanisms controlling the association of body weight and fat mass with bone mass. However, contradictory results have been reported for the association between serum adipocytokines and bone mineral density (BMD). We therefore examined whether the serum adipocytokine and ghrelin levels, markers of fat metabolism, are associated w
OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a growing health problem in males as well as in females. Sex hormones and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) have been shown to be the major determinants in male bone metabolism. Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a recently identified cytokine that acts as a decoy receptor for the receptor activator of NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL). OPG and RANKL have been shown to be important regulators of osteoclastogenesis. However, the relationship between the OPG-RANKL system and male bone s
Serum ferritin, but not iron level, was a significant predictor of hypertension in middle-aged Korean men. Fatty liver disease and insulin resistance may be mediators of this high ferritin-hypertension association.
OBJECTIVE: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a recently identified cytokine that acts as a decoy receptor for the RANK ligand. Moreover, OPG has been shown to be an important inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis in animal models. However, the relationship between circulating OPG levels and female bone status in human populations is unclear. In this study we undertook to investigate the relationship between circulating OPG levels and bone mineral metabolism in healthy women. PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Our subj
OBJECTIVE: The role of adiponectin in bone metabolism has been recently reported in in vitro and in vivo studies. There has been no report on the association of adiponectin gene polymorphism and bone mineral density (BMD). Therefore, we investigated whether two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), T45G and G276T, in the adiponectin gene were related to BMD in Koreans. We also report on the identification of adiponectin and its receptors 1 and 2 in human osteoblast-like cell lines. PATIENTS AN
OBJECTIVE: Osteoprotegerin (OPG) is a recently identified cytokine that acts as a decoy receptor for the receptor activator of the NF-kappaB ligand (RANKL). OPG has been shown to be an important inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis and arterial calcification in animal models. OPG has been proposed as a link molecule between osteoporosis and arterial calcification, but the relationship between the OPG gene and the cardiovascular system in human populations is unclear. Thus, the aim of this study was t
Increased life expectancy and increased obesity have contributed to an increasing incidence of osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus. Recent meta-analyses and cohort studies confirm that diabetes is associated with a higher risk of fracture. Patients with type 2 diabetes exhibit increased fracture risks despite a higher bone mass, which are mainly attributable to non-skeletal risk factors. Patients with type 1 diabetes may have impaired bone formation because of absence of the anabolic effects of i

Recent The Korean Society of Bone Metabolism guidelines recommended bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women; in women during the menopausal transition with clinical risk factors for osteoporosis; in premenopausal women with amenorrhea longer than 6 months; in men aged 70 and older; in men under age 70 with clinical risk factors for osteoporosis; in adults with a fragility fracture; in adults with diseases or taking medications associated with secondary osteoporosis; in anyone being co
