Professor Ki Woong Nam's research lab specializes in cerebrovascular and metabolic medicine, focusing on the pathophysiological links between metabolic markers and cerebrovascular diseases. The lab investigates biomarkers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, and homocysteine in relation to stroke outcomes, including stroke-associated pneumonia, early recurrent lesions, and neurological deterioration. A central theme is identifying accessible, objective, and clinically relevant indicators for predicting stroke complications and progression, particularly in subgroups like patients with cancer or subcortical infarctions. The lab also explores the role of insulin resistance and hypercoagulability in stroke pathogenesis, especially in cryptogenic stroke.

Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel inflammatory marker based on the composition ratio of blood cell counts. Serum NLR levels were associated with END events in patients with ischemic stroke due to LAA. Since NLR was also closely correlated with the underlying vascular lesions, our results indicated clues for mechanisms of END events.
