研究室紹介

Professor Kyung In Woo's research lab specializes in ophthalmic oncology and orbital disorders, with a focus on rare and complex conditions such as lacrimal gland carcinoma, solitary fibrous tumors of the lacrimal sac, and retinoblastoma. The lab investigates the clinical outcomes, quality of life impacts, and long-term management strategies for patients with epiphora, orbital tumors, and paraneoplastic syndromes. Research also emphasizes innovative surgical techniques—like the rotating suture method—and multimodal, globe-sparing treatments to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications.

Retinoblastoma patients pass through multiple windows of susceptibility to specific SPTs. This information will aid health care providers in monitoring this high-risk group, and it provides new insights for studying the underlying genetic predisposition to SPTs.

Impact of epiphora on vision-related quality of life

SJR Q2BMC OphthalmologyOA

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to evaluate vision-related quality of life (QOL) in epiphora (excessive tear production) patients. METHODS: A total of 342 epiphora patients who visited ophthalmology clinics at 21 general hospitals during a 1-week period were enrolled; 245 females and 97 males with a mean age of 52±13 years. Participants completed a self-administered questionnaire on the extent to which epiphora limited their daily activities. Questions on frequency of discomfort with daily activitie

Eosinophilic Granuloma of the Orbit: Understanding the Paradox of Aggressive Destruction Responsive to Minimal Intervention
Kyung In Woo, Gerald J. Harris
SJR Q2Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Transient immune dysfunction may provoke the cytokine-mediated proliferation of pathologic Langerhans cells within the hematopoietic marrow of the anterolateral frontal bone. These cells cause osteolysis through elaboration of interleukin-1 and prostaglandin E2. Corticosteroids can inhibit the mediators. We recommend incisional biopsy, frozen-section provisional diagnosis, subtotal curettage, intralesional corticosteroid instillation, postoperative systemic evaluation, and long-term surveillance

Management of Lacrimal Gland Carcinoma

SJR Q2Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Given the rarity of lacrimal gland carcinoma, multi-institutional studies and consistent reporting of size and histologic type of tumors in the literature may be prudent. Particularly, multimodality globe-sparing treatment strategies should be studied further.

The findings indicate that solitary fibrous tumor can occur in the lacrimal sac and may recur locally if it is removed incompletely. To our knowledge, these are the first reported cases of solitary fibrous tumors occurring in the lacrimal sac.

Transcanalicular Laser-Assisted Revision of Failed Dacryocystorhinostomy
Kyung In Woo, Seong-Hwan Moon, Yoon-Duck Kim
SJR Q2Ophthalmic surgery, lasers & imaging retina

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite the high success rate of external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR), recurrent tearing after DCR can be troublesome. The authors performed transcanalicular revision in 6 patients with failed DCR. PATIENTS AND METHODS: With the use of a continuous wave Nd:YAG laser with a sclerostomy probe, the internal ostium was reopened by a transcanalicular approach. The authors applied 0.4 mg/ml of mitomycin-C around the opening for 5 minutes intranasally and inserted a silicone t

Current treatment of lacrimal gland carcinoma
Kyung In Woo, Yoon-Duck Kim, Ho-Seok Sa, Bita Esmaeli
SJR Q1Current Opinion in Ophthalmology

In selected patients with lacrimal gland carcinoma, eye-sparing surgery with eye-sparing radiation therapy offers preservation of visual function with good local control and minimal radiation-induced ocular toxic effects. In patients with recurrent or metastatic disease, a search for actionable cancer-associated mutations may be prudent.

Four cases of dacryocystocele
Kyung In Woo, Young Dae Kim
SJR Q2Korean Journal of Ophthalmology

Dacryocystocele is a rare complication of chronic dacryocystitis. We report four such cases in which epiphora and painless cystic mass located inferior to the medical canthus were manifested. Computed tomographic scanning of the orbit showed a well-demarcated low density mass in the lacrimal sac area, and extending to the nasolacrimal duct. We completely or partially excised the mass and depending on the condition of the canaliculi and puncta, performed dacryocystorhinostomy, canaliculorhinostom

Subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit associated with sinusitis
Kyung In Woo, Young Dae Kim
SJR Q2Korean Journal of Ophthalmology

Subperiosteal hematoma of the orbit is a rare but well-recognized entity, usually caused by trauma. Two cases of subperiosteal hematoma associated with sinusitis are presented. A 44-year-old woman experienced the sudden onset of proptosis, and decreased visual acuity. Computed tomographic scanning and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a frontoethmoidal mucocele and a biconvex mass in the upper part of the left orbit. The mucocele was drained during nasal endoscopic surgery and the subperiostea

SJR Q2Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical outcomes of eye-preserving surgery followed by adjuvant radiotherapy in patients with lacrimal gland carcinoma. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients with lacrimal gland carcinoma who underwent eye-preserving surgery were studied. RESULTS: At last follow up, 32 patients were alive without disease, 3 patients were alive with disease with distant metastasis, 1 patient had died of disease, and 1 patient had died of other cause. The 5-year recurrence-free survival rate was

Management of epiblepharon

SJR Q1Current Opinion in Ophthalmology

Although epiblepharon may resolve with facial growth, surgical correction is needed for cases in which there is significant corneal injury from the lash touch. Surgical management should focus on techniques that are effective, with little chance of complication, and do not create a lower eyelid crease.

Prevalence and Risk Factors for Thyroid Eye Disease among Korean Dysthyroid Patients
Kyung In Woo, Yoon‐Duck Kim, Sang Yeul Lee
SJR Q2Korean Journal of OphthalmologyOA

The lower prevalence of thyroid eye disease in dysthyroid Korean patients and the influence of gender on risk factors in this study are novel findings compared to studies performed involving Europeans. Although the risk factors for thyroid eye disease are understood in part, a more in-depth comparative study of gender and ethnic groups is needed to fully understand the biological significance of the demographic factors.
