Professor Kyung Mi Oh's research lab focuses on the neurobiological and clinical aspects of migraine, with particular emphasis on interictal brain metabolism, comorbid psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression, and the impact of hormonal changes—especially in middle-aged women—on headache disorders. The lab also investigates sensory symptoms like photophobia and their accurate assessment, as well as the role of metabolic factors such as insulin resistance in stroke outcomes. Using advanced neuroimaging and epidemiological methods, the lab aims to improve the understanding and management of neurological and psychiatric comorbidities in headache and cerebrovascular diseases.

15Whereas there are many H(2)(15)O-positron emission tomography (PET) studies demonstrating neuronal activation during acute migraine attacks, little information is available on the interictal (headache-free period) glucose metabolic changes in migraine. We therefore conducted voxel-based statistical parametric mapping analysis of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose-PET to evaluate interictal metabolic differences between 20 episodic migraine patients (four with aura; three men; mean age 34.0 +/- 6.4 years)
Photophobia is an important criterion for the diagnosis of migraine. However, several Asian epidemiological surveys about migraine have shown lesser prevalence of photophobia than that of Western studies. This discrepancy is probably caused by underestimation of photophobia due to inappropriate questioning of patients by physicians. To investigate this issue, we developed a questionnaire about photophobia and evaluated its usefulness in 103 patients with migraine. In phase 1 of the study, we fou
BACKGROUND: Although anxiety and depression have been classified as distinct traits of affective disorders, previous studies have reported their co-occurrence in subjects with migraine. However, few reports are available on the clinical implications of this comorbidity. This study is to assess the comorbidity of anxiety and depression in subjects with migraine and its clinical implications in a population-based sample from Korea. METHODS: We selected Korean subjects aged 19-69 years by the strat
Insulin resistance is associated with the occurrence of stroke and atherosclerotic disease. However, the relationship between insulin resistance and the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke in non-diabetic patients is unclear. We hypothesized that insulin resistance might affect short-term functional recovery after acute ischemic stroke in non-diabetic patients. Between May 2014 and December 2016, 1377 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled from a prospectively maintained st
Middle-aged women are frequent visitors in headache clinics. We investigated the differences in headache characteristics of middle-aged women (aged 40-54 years) according to their menopausal status. In total, 229 women were divided into the following three groups: premenopausal (n = 78), perimenopausal (n = 69), and postmenopausal (n = 82). The prevalence of tension-type headaches was higher in the peri- and postmenopausal groups than in the premenopausal group (p < 0.05), whereas the prevalence
Dissociated abducting nystagmus of the contralesional eye on attempted gaze to the contralesional side is typical of internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO).1 Rarely, dissociated torsional-vertical nystagmus, usually downbeat in the ipsilateral eye and intorsional in the contralateral eye,2,3 or ipsilesional torsional nystagmus4,5 may occur in INO. We report a patient with isolated INO and jerky seesaw nystagmus from a focal pontine lesion and discuss possible mechanisms of various torsional-vertical
BACKGROUND: Pattern-induced visual discomfort and photophobia are frequently observed symptoms in migraineurs. The presumed pathophysiologic mechanisms of pattern glare and photophobia seem to overlap anatomically within the central nervous system. OBJECTIVE: To assess the relationship between interictal pattern-induced visual discomfort and ictal photophobia in episodic migraineurs. METHODS: We compared pattern-induced visual discomfort among 3 groups: controls, migraineurs without ictal photop

Serum cardiac troponin I (cTnI) is often elevated in patients with ischemic stroke, and is associated with their prognosis. Since cTnI is also closely related to atrial fibrillation (AF), cTnI may be a sensitive prognostic indicator in patients with AF-related stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the association between serum cTnI and early neurological deterioration (END) in patients with AF-related stroke. We included consecutive AF-related stroke patients between 2013 and 2015. END was define
Low body mass index is closely related to a high risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related biomarkers including amyloid-β (Aβ) deposition. However, the association between sarcopenia and Aβ-confirmed AD remains controversial. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between sarcopenia and the AD continuum. We explored sarcopenia's association with clinical implications of participants on the AD continuum. We prospectively enrolled 142 participants on the AD continuum (19 with preclinical A
