Professor Mi Jin Kim's research lab focuses on molecular and translational biomedical research, with key interests in metabolic reprogramming in cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma, and the identification of novel therapeutic targets such as PPARδ. The lab also investigates antibiotic resistance mechanisms in *Helicobacter pylori*, contributing to the understanding of treatment failure and resistance patterns in gastrointestinal infections. Additionally, the lab explores genetic engineering in plants, including metabolic pathway manipulation in soybeans for enhanced nutritional traits.

15BACKGROUND: Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial probiotic organisms that contribute to improved nutrition, microbial balance, and immuno-enhancement of the intestinal tract, as well as lower cholesterol. Although present in many foods, most trials have been in spreads or dairy products. Here we tested whether Bifidobacteria isolates could lower cholesterol, inhibit harmful enzyme activities, and control fecal water content. METHODS: In vitro culture experiments were performed to evaluate t
The carotenoid biosynthetic pathway was genetically manipulated using the recombinant PAC (Phytoene synthase-2A-Carotene desaturase) gene in Korean soybean (Glycine max L. cv. Kwangan). The PAC gene was linked to either the β-conglycinin (β) or CaMV-35S (35S) promoter to generate β-PAC and 35S-PAC constructs, respectively. A total of 37 transgenic lines (19 for β-PAC and 18 for 35S-PAC) were obtained through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using the modified half-seed method. The multi-cop
Percutaneous cholecystostomy is an effective procedure and a good alternative for patients unfit to undergo immediate surgery because of severe sepsis or an underlying comorbidity. After patients with AAC have recovered from percutaneous cholecystostomy, further treatment such as cholecystectomy might not be needed.
It is important to pay attention to the indirect effects of the social distancing implemented to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on children and adolescent health. The aim of the present study was to explore impacts of a reduction in physical activity caused by COVID-19 outbreak in pediatric patients diagnosed with obesity. This study conducted between pre-school closing and school closing period and 90 patients aged between 6- and 18-year-old were included. Co
Abstract The tyrosine kinase inhibitor sorafenib is the only therapeutic agent approved for the treatment of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but acquired resistance to sorafenib is high. Here, we report metabolic reprogramming in sorafenib-resistant HCC and identify a regulatory molecule, peroxisome proliferator–activated receptor-δ (PPARδ), as a potential therapeutic target. Sorafenib-resistant HCC cells showed markedly higher glutamine metabolism and reductive glutamine carboxylation,
C1qTNF-Related proteins (CTRPs), a new highly conserved family of adiponectin paralogs, were recently identified as being involved in diverse processes including metabolism, host defense, apoptosis, cell differentiation, and organogenesis. However, the functional role of CTRP6 remains poorly identified. Here we provide evidence that CTRP6 induces the expression of interleukin-10 (IL-10) in macrophages. Conditioned medium from CTRP6-expressing HEK293 cells increased IL-10 expression in Raw264.7 c
The distribution of minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) for amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, tetracycline, azithromycin, and fluoroquinolone (ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, and moxifloxacin) have shifted to higher concentrations from 1987 to 2003 in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) strains isolated from Korean patients. MIC values of secondary isolates were higher than those of primary isolates. Of treatment-failure patients, 16.4% showed mixed infections with both antibiotic-suscept
BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of 'top-down' regimens for the treatment of paediatric Crohn's disease (CD) and to compare it with the effects of 'step-up' treatment. METHODS: We evaluated patients treated with 'top-down' and 'step-up' regimens at 8 weeks after the initiation of treatment, with 1 year of follow-up. Of the 29 patients who received infliximab, 11 cases refractory to conventional therapy were categorized as the 'step-up' group; and 18 cases, with mode
"Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma" or "Sternberg tumor" is a very rare variant of smooth muscle tumors with a distinctive gross appearance. We describe a similar lesion, probably the sixth reported case, comparing its clinicopathological features with those of previous cases. A 26-yr-old nulliparous woman underwent laparotomy for a large pelvic mass replacing the postero-lateral aspect of the uterus with extension into the left pelvic cavity in the form of numerous exophytic congested small nod
Insulin resistance, which implies impairment of insulin signaling in the target tissues, is a common cause of type 2 diabetes. Adipose tissue plays an important role in insulin resistance through the dysregulated production and secretion of adipose-derived proteins, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, leptin, resistin, angiotensinogen, and adiponectin. Adiponectin was estimated to be a protective adipocytokine against atherosclerosis, and also to have an ant
Accurate diagnosis of ovarian clear cell carcinoma (CCC) is important because of its poor prognosis with chemoresistance and a high recurrent rate. The clinicopathologic characteristics and prognostic significance of the cell cycle regulator [early mitotic inhibitor-1 (Emi1)] and galactoside-binding protein (Galectin-3) were evaluated. Among 155 CCCs from 18 hospitals in Korea between 1995 and 2006, 129 pure CCCs were selected with consensus using immunohistochemical stains for hepatocyte nuclea
