Professor Noh Ji-yun's research lab specializes in infectious disease epidemiology, with a focus on viral infections such as influenza and SARS-CoV-2. The lab investigates the impact of public health interventions—like social distancing and mask-wearing—on the transmission dynamics of respiratory viruses, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also explores vaccine immunogenicity in vulnerable populations, including patients with chronic kidney disease, and conducts serosurveillance to assess population-level immunity and disease burden. The lab’s work bridges clinical virology, public health policy, and health system resilience during pandemics.

Serosurveillance studies reveal the actual disease burden and herd immunity level in the population. In Seoul, Korea, a cross-sectional investigation showed 0.07% anti-severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 antibody seropositivity among 1,500 outpatients of the university hospitals. Low seroprevalence reflects well-implemented social distancing. Serosurveillance should be repeated as the pandemic progresses.

Here, we examine peripheral blood memory T cell responses against the SARS-CoV-2 BA.4/BA.5 variant spike among vaccinated individuals with or without Omicron breakthrough infections.
