Professor Sae Jin Lim's research lab focuses on understanding the immunological mechanisms underlying T cell exhaustion in chronic viral infections and cancer. The lab investigates the development, maintenance, and functional regulation of stem-like CD8 T cells—particularly TCF1+ PD-1+ progenitor cells—that sustain the antiviral and antitumor T cell response. Using integrative approaches including single-cell genomics, epigenetics, and in vivo models, the lab explores how these progenitor T cells can be reactivated or expanded for immunotherapy. A central theme is the role of the tumor microenvironment and lymphoid organs in shaping T cell responses and mediating systemic antitumor immunity, especially in the context of radiotherapy and immune checkpoint blockade.
