Professor Sang Cheol Lee's research lab focuses on translational biomedical research with a strong emphasis on clinical imaging, urological oncology, and respiratory complications in infectious diseases. The lab investigates ferroptosis and lipid metabolism in cancer progression, develops advanced small-animal imaging technologies such as micro-CT for preclinical studies, and evaluates clinical outcomes in urological interventions like percutaneous nephrolithotomy and renal tumor surgery. Additionally, the lab explores the impact of underlying respiratory conditions on the severity of infectious diseases, particularly COVID-19, using large-scale national health databases.

15Ferroptosis is a type of iron-dependent regulated necrosis induced by lipid peroxidation that occurs in cellular membranes. Among the various lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) associated with several phospholipids, such as phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylcholine (PC), are responsible for ferroptosis-inducing lipid peroxidation. Since the de novo synthesis of PUFAs is strongly restricted in mammals, cells take up essential fatty acids from the blood and lymph to produce a
OBJECTIVES: Currently, no standardized method is available to predict success rate after percutaneous nephrolithotomy. We devised and validated the Seoul National University Renal Stone Complexity (S-ReSC) scoring system for predicting the stone-free rate after single-tract percutaneous nephrolithotomy (sPCNL). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The data of 155 consecutive patients who underwent sPCNL were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative computed tomography images were reviewed. The S-ReSC score was a
A dedicated small-animal x-ray micro computed tomography (micro-CT) system has been developed to screen laboratory small animals such as mice and rats. The micro-CT system consists of an indirect-detection flat-panel x-ray detector with a field-of-view of 120 x 120 mm2, a microfocus x-ray source, a rotational subject holder and a parallel data processing system. The flat-panel detector is based on a matrix-addressed photodiode array fabricated by a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor)
The severity of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is associated with various comorbidities. However, no studies have yet demonstrated the potential risk of respiratory failure and mortality in COVID-19 patients with pre-existing asthma. We selected 7272 adult COVID-19 patients from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment COVID-19 database for this nationwide retrospective cohort study. Among these, 686 patients with asthma were assessed by their severities and evaluated by the clinica
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RPN) has emerged as a viable alternative to open partial nephrectomy (OPN) for small renal masses (SRMs). Comparative outcomes of RPN and OPN at a single institution were analyzed. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to compare 69 RPNs with 234 OPNs between May 2003 and December 2010 at a single institution. Clinicopathologic variables, operative parameters, and renal functional outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: Th
Underlying chronic respiratory disease may be associated with the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study investigated the impact of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on the risk for respiratory failure and mortality in COVID-19 patients. A nationwide retrospective cohort study was conducted in 4610 patients (≥ 40 years old) infected with COVID-19 between January 20 and May 27, 2020, using data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Health Insurance Review and
PURPOSE: To compare the accuracy rates between ultrasound (US)-guided and blind knee intra-articular injection via the suprapatellar bursa. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with radiographically confirmed knee osteoarthritis (Kellgren/Lawrence grade 2 or 3) without effusion were included. Fifty patients were assigned to the US-guided injection group and 49 to the blind injection group. After a US-guided or blind injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) and contrast dye through the suprapatellar bursa into
Intra-articular injections via an MPP using sonographic guidance may raise the accuracy rate in knee joint injections.
Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are causative agents of various diseases associated with cellular hyperproliferation, including cervical cancer, one of the most prevalent tumors in women. E7 is one of the two HPV-encoded oncoproteins and directs recruitment and subsequent degradation of tumor-suppressive proteins such as retinoblastoma protein (pRb) via its LxCxE motif. E7 also triggers tumorigenesis in a pRb-independent pathway through its C-terminal domain, which has yet been largely undetermine
Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) significantly impact surgical outcome. We investigated the predictive ability of controlling nutritional status (CONUT) for PPC after lung resection in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We retrospectively reviewed data of 922 patients with NSCLC who underwent complete resection from January 2016-December 2017. We analyzed the frequency and characteristics of PPCs and compared receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves of various pr
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate regenerative effects of ultrasound- (US-) guided injection with human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UCB-MSCs) and/or polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) injection in a chronic traumatic full-thickness rotator cuff tendon tear (FTRCTT) in a rabbit model. METHODS: = 32) were allocated into 4 groups. After a 5 mm sized FTRCTT just proximal to the insertion site on the subscapularis tendon was created by excision, the wound was im
Atopic dermatitis (AD) is an inflammatory skin disorder that is both uncomfortable and distressing to patients, and its prevalence has been steadily increasing. It is obvious that the identification of efficient markers of AD in plasma would offer the possibility of effective diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strategies. In this study, a proteomic approach was used to analyze plasma glycoproteins from both children with AD and healthy child donors. Several protein spots showing significant qu
