Professor Seung Hwan Lee's research lab specializes in translational pharmacology with a focus on neuroimmune interactions in chronic pain and acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. The lab investigates the role of glial and immune cells in neuropathic and inflammatory pain, particularly in orofacial and spinal pathways, while also advancing novel acid-suppressive therapies such as potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs) for gastroesophageal reflux disease. A key research direction involves understanding the impact of genetic polymorphisms—especially CYP2C19—on drug response and pharmacokinetics of agents like voriconazole and P-CABs. The lab integrates preclinical models with clinical pharmacology studies to develop targeted, personalized treatments.

15Introduction Neuropathic pain is a debilitating condition. The importance of neuroimmune interactions in neuropathic pain has been evidenced by the involvement of different immune cells in peripheral and central sensitization of pathological pain. Macrophages and microglia are the most abundant immune cells activated in injured nerves and spinal cord, respectively. Several lines of evidence showed that macrophage/microglia survival, activation, proliferation, and differentiation require the invo
AIMS: Nocturnal acid breakthrough has been considered an unmet need of proton-pump inhibitors. Tegoprazan, a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker, is expected to show improved properties for this unmet need. This study was aimed to compare night-time acid suppression by tegoprazan with that by vonoprazan or esomeprazole, and to explore the effect of CYP2C19 phenotypes on acid-suppressive effects. METHODS: A randomized, open-label, 3-period, 6-sequence crossover study was conducted. A single
The current study assessed the influence of the CYP2C19 genotype on the pharmacokinetics and tolerability of voriconazole after single and multiple oral doses in healthy volunteers. Six subjects for the CYP2C19 homozygous extensive metabolizer (EMs), 6 for heterozygous extensive metabolizer (HEMs), and 6 for poor metabolizer (PMs) were enrolled, and their CYP2C9, CYP3A5, and MDR1 genotypes were analyzed. After a single intravenous infusion or single and multiple oral doses of 200 mg of voriconaz
Oro-facial pain following injury and infection is frequently observed in dental clinics. While neuropathic pain evoked by injury associated with nerve lesion has an involvement of glia/immune cells, inflammatory hyperalgesia has an exaggerated sensitization mediated by local and circulating immune mediators. To better understand the contribution of central nervous system (CNS) glial cells in these different pathological conditions, in this study we sought to characterize functional phenotypes of
BACKGROUND: Potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CABs) are emerging as novel treatments for acid-related disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease. Tegoprazan and revaprazan are approved P-CABs in South Korea, but the pharmacodynamics and safety/tolerability of the two drugs have never been compared. AIMS: To evaluate the pharmacodynamics and safety/tolerability of tegoprazan and revaprazan after single and multiple oral doses METHODS: A randomised, open-label, active-controlled stud
BACKGROUND: DWP14012 (fexuprazan), a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker, is under development for the treatment of acid-related disorders. AIMS: To compare the pharmacodynamics (PDs), pharmacokinetics (PKs) and safety of DWP14012 among healthy subjects of Korean, Caucasian and Japanese descent. METHODS: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, single- and multiple-dose study was conducted. Ten subjects in each dose group (40, 60 or 80 mg for Koreans; 40 or 80 mg for Caucasians; 20,
Tegoprazan, a novel potassium-competitive acid blocker, is used to treat acid-related diseases. However, there is no information on the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) profiles of the marketed dosage of tegoprazan under various meal timings in a fed and fasted state. The study aimed to assess the effect of meal timing on PKs and PDs of tegoprazan 50 mg after a single administration in healthy male subjects. An open-label, single-dose, three-treatment, three-period crossover study w
OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) helps optimize drug management for patients with epilepsy. Salivary testing is both noninvasive and easy, and has several other advantages. Due to technical advances, salivary TDM has become feasible for several drugs, including AEDs, and its value has been investigated. Until recently, saliva TDM of perampanel (PER) had not been reported. The purpose of our study was to confirm whether saliva is a biological substitute f
A novel and an efficient rescue system with a multi-agent simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) framework is proposed to reduce the rescue time while rescuing the people trapped inside a burning building. In this study, the truncated signed distance (TSD) based SLAM algorithm is employed to accurately construct a two-dimensional map of the surroundings. For a new and significantly different scenario, information is gathered and the general iterative closest point method (GICP) is directly
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: CYP2C19-mediated drug interactions of acid-reducing agents are clinically important given the high possibility of concomitant administration with CYP2C19 substrates. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of tegoprazan on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of a CYP2C19 substrate, proguanil, compared with vonoprazan or esomeprazole. METHODS: A two-part, randomized, open-label, two-sequence, three-period crossover study was conducted in 16 healthy CYP2C19 extensive metabolizers (
