Professor Solmoi Park's research lab specializes in sustainable construction materials, with a primary focus on alkali-activated materials (AAMs) such as fly ash- and slag-based cements. The lab investigates the hydration, carbonation, and long-term durability of these materials under CO₂-rich environments, aiming to enhance CO₂ sequestration and reduce the carbon footprint of concrete. The present study investigated aluminosilicate gel in alkali-activated fly ash exposed to a CO₂-rich environment by means of NMR spectroscopy. The alkali-activated fly ash was exposed to an atmospheric CO₂ concentration of 10% after curing at 80 °C initially for 24 h. The present study investigates the carbonation of slags activated by NaOH, Na 2 SiO 3, Na 2 CO 3, and Na 2 SO 4 . The main hydrates in those activated with NaOH or Na 2 SiO 3 were C-(N-)A-S-H, strätlingite, and MgAl-layered double hydroxide phases as observed using different experimental characterization techniques and thermodynamic modeling.
