Professor Soon Hyun Ahn's research lab specializes in thyroid cancer biology and translational oncology, with a focus on improving diagnostic accuracy and understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying aggressive thyroid malignancies. The lab investigates cancer stem cells, particularly in papillary thyroid carcinoma, and explores targeted therapies using preclinical models such as orthotopic xenografts. Key research directions include evaluating core needle biopsy as an alternative to fine-needle aspiration for better diagnostic outcomes and studying the efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitors like sunitinib in BRAF-mutated and RET/PTC-rearranged thyroid cancers. An orthotopic model of papillary thyroid carcinoma was successfully established in nude mice using BRAF-mutated and RET/PTC1-rearranged cell lines. These models mimic the human disease and will thus be useful for evaluating the clinical potential of novel targeted therapies.
BACKGROUND: Distant metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is most commonly identified in the lung, but risk factors are still on debate.
