Professor Sung-Deuk Choi's research lab specializes in environmental chemistry and pollution science, focusing on the fate, transport, and impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in remote and urban environments. The lab investigates long-range atmospheric transport of pollutants to polar regions, the behavior of trace contaminants in wastewater sludge under advanced treatment processes like ultrasound, and the environmental contamination of PAHs in urban and industrial areas. Additionally, the lab contributes to climate change mitigation through studies on forest carbon sequestration and biomass accumulation in reforested ecosystems.

15To assess levels and patterns of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in polar regions, XAD-resin based passive air samplers were deployed for one year at the Korean polar research stations at Ny-Alesund, Norway (2005-2006) and King George Island, Antarctica (2004-2005). Backward trajectories suggest that these stations are affected by long-range transport from source regions in Northern Europe and Russia and the southern tip of South America, respectively. Relat
