Professor Sung-Joon Ahn's research lab specializes in vitreo-retinal diseases and infectious uveitis, with a strong focus on ocular toxocariasis, hypertensive retinopathy, and surgical outcomes in retinal disorders. The lab investigates the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of posterior segment diseases, particularly emphasizing serological diagnostics, intraocular drug kinetics, and surgical optimization in vitrectomized eyes. Key research directions include improving visual prognosis through early intervention and refining surgical techniques such as internal limiting membrane peeling in epiretinal membrane surgery.

15Despite being one of the most common zoonotic infections worldwide, human toxocariasis has been one of the neglected tropical diseases. Severe hypertension resulted in exudative retinal and choroidal changes, characterized by SRF accumulation and increased SCT. Our grading system may represent retinopathy severity and predict visual outcome better than the KWB grading system in patients with severe hypertension.
Overall intraocular pharmacokinetic properties of ranibizumab in vitrectomized eyes were similar to those in nonvitrectomized eyes. Our data do not support the use of different dosing regimens of ranibizumab in vitrectomized eyes.
Our study discusses the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies for OT. Evaluation of total IgE, in addition to anti-toxocara antibody, can assist in the serologic diagnosis of OT. Combined albendazole and corticosteroid therapy may reduce intraocular inflammation and recurrence. Migrating feature of granuloma is clinically important and may further suggest the diagnosis of OT. Patients who received epiretinal membrane surgery without additional ILM peeling showed better visual and anatomical outcome than those with additional ILM peeling at postoperative 1 month. However, surgical outcomes were comparable between the two groups, thereafter. In terms of visual outcome and photoreceptor integrity, additional ILM peeling may not be an essential procedure.
