Professor Sung-Joon Jeong's research lab specializes in molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying sensory transduction and neuropathic pain, with a focus on ion channels such as TRPV1 and HCN channels. The lab investigates how endogenous signaling molecules, pattern recognition receptors (e.g., TLR4), and cellular processes like autophagy regulate neuronal excitability and pain sensitization. Key research directions include the modulation of TRPV1 by second messengers (e.g., DAG), the role of TLR4 in pain sensitization, and the therapeutic potential of natural compounds like eugenol in treating chronic pain. The lab employs a multidisciplinary approach combining patch-clamp electrophysiology, calcium imaging, molecular biology, and behavioral studies in rodent models.

15The capsaicin receptor, known as transient receptor potential channel vanilloid subtype 1 (TRPV1), is activated by a wide range of noxious stimulants and putative ligands such as capsaicin, heat, pH, anandamide, and phosphorylation by protein kinase C (PKC). However, the identity of endogenous activators for TRPV1 under physiological condition is still debated. Here, we report that diacylglycerol (DAG) directly activates TRPV1 channel in a membrane-delimited manner in rat dorsal root ganglion (D
BACKGROUND: We have previously reported that histamine-induced pruritus was attenuated in toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) knockout mice due to decreased transient receptor potential V1 (TRPV1) sensitivity. Our results implied that TLR4 potentiated TRPV1 activation in sensory neurons; however, the molecular mechanism has yet to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the molecular mechanisms of TLR4-mediated TRPV1 potentiation using TLR4-deficient sensory neurons and a heterologous expression s
Mechanical allodynia is a common symptom found in neuropathic patients. Hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channels and their current, I(h), have been suggested to play an important role in neuropathic pain, especially in mechanical allodynia and spontaneous pain, by involvement in spontaneous ectopic discharges after peripheral nerve injury. Thus, I(h) blockers may hold therapeutic potential for the intervention of mechanical allodynia under diverse neuropathic conditions. Here
Eugenol has sedative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic effects, but also serves as an irritant through the regulation of a different set of ion channels. Activation of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors on sensory neurons leads to the stabilization of neuronal excitability but contributes to formalin-induced inflammatory pain. In this study, we examined the effect of eugenol on the GABA-induced current in rat trigeminal ganglia (TG) neurons and in human embryonic kidney (HEK)
A mammalian cell renovates itself by autophagy, a process through which cellular components are recycled to produce energy and maintain homeostasis. Recently, the abundance of gap junction proteins was shown to be regulated by autophagy during starvation conditions, suggesting that transmembrane proteins are also regulated by autophagy. Transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1), an ion channel localized to the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum (ER), is a sensory transducer th
Poor adherence to medication can lead to treatment failure in healthcare workers (HWCs) with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) who are at high risk of developing active tuberculosis. However, the factors associated with non-completion of nine-month LTBI treatment with isoniazid (9 H) have not been well studied. We investigated the completion rate and factors affecting adherence to LTBI treatment with 9 H among HCWs. A prospective cohort study of 114 HCWs who were diagnosed with LTBI by Quanti
BACKGROUND/AIMS: The incidence of symptomatic hepatitis A reportedly increased among 20- to 40-year-old Korean during the late 2000s. Vaccination against hepatitis A was commenced in the late 1990s and was extended to children aged <10 years. In the present study we analyzed the changes in the seroprevalence of IgG anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) over the past 13 years. METHODS: Overall, 4903 subjects who visited our hospital between January 2001 and December 2013 were studied. The seroprevalence o
Modulation of the function of somatosensory neurons is an important analgesic strategy, requiring the proposal of novel molecular targets. Many G-protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) have been deorphanized, but the receptor locations, outcomes due to their activations, and their signal transductions remain to be elucidated, regarding the somatosensory nociceptor function. Here we report that GPR171, expressed in a nociceptor subpopulation, attenuated pain signals via Gi/o-coupled modulation of the a
The generation of pain signals from primary afferent neurons is explained by a labeled-line code. However, this notion cannot apply in a simple way to cutaneous C-fibers, which carry signals from a variety of receptors that respond to various stimuli including agonist chemicals. To represent the discharge patterns of C-fibers according to different agonist chemicals, we have developed a quantitative approach using three consecutive spikes. By using this method, the generation of pain in response
The general disease burden associated with the restrictive spirometric pattern (RSP) is substantial. However, the impact of RSP by its severity on general health problems and quality of life has not been well elucidated. This study aimed to analyse nutrition, physical activity, and quality of life in subjects who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2016 according to severity of RSP. Participants were classified as subjects with normal spirometry, those
Cyclooxygenase metabolizes dihomo-γ-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid to form prostaglandin (PG) E, including PGE1 and PGE2, respectively. Although PGE2 is well known to play an important role in the development and maintenance of hyperalgesia and allodynia, the role of PGE1 in pain is unknown. We confirm whether PGE1 induced pain using orofacial pain behavioral test in mice and determine the target molecule of PGE1 in TG neurons with whole-cell patch-clamp and immunohistochemistry.
