Professor Sung-Ju Lee's research lab specializes in mobile and wireless networking, with a strong focus on energy-efficient and adaptive protocols for dynamic environments such as mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The lab investigates on-demand routing and multicast protocols, mobility-aware networking, and distributed clustering algorithms to enhance network scalability, reduce control overhead, and prolong network lifetime. Recent work emphasizes integrating deep learning and IoT-based embedded systems for real-time monitoring in smart agriculture, particularly for livestock management. The lab combines theoretical protocol design with practical implementation, especially in resource-constrained and mobile scenarios.

15This paper presents a novel multicast routing protocol for mobile ad hoc wireless networks. The protocol, termed ODMRP (on-demand multicast routing protocol), is a mesh-based, rather than a conventional tree-based multicast scheme and uses a forwarding group concept (only a subset of nodes forwards the multicast packets via scoped flooding). It applies on-demand procedures to dynamically build routes and maintain multicast group membership. ODMRP is well suited for ad hoc wireless networks with
In this paper we investigate the performance of multicast routing protocols in wireless mobile ad hoc networks. An ad hoc network is composed of mobile nodes without the presence of a wired support infrastructure. In this environment, routing/multicasting protocols are faced with the challenge of producing multihop routes under host mobility and bandwidth constraints. In recent years, a number of new multicast protocols of different styles have been proposed for ad hoc networks. However, systema
An ad hoc wireless network is an infrastructureless network composed of mobile hosts. The primary concerns in ad hoc networks are bandwidth limitations and unpredictable topology changes. Thus, efficient utilization of routing packets and immediate recovery of route breaks are critical in routing and multicasting protocols. A multicast scheme, on-demand multicast routing protocol (ODMRP), has been recently proposed for mobile ad hoc networks. ODMRP is a reactive (on-demand) protocol that deliver
Ad hoc networks are gaining increasing popularity in recent years because of their ease of deployment. No wired base station or infrastructure is supported, and each host communicasts one another via packet radios. In ad hoc networks, routing protocols are challenged with establishing and maintaining multihop routes in the face of mobility, bandwidth limitation and power constraints. In this dissertation, we study the routing strategies for ad hoc networks. On-demand routing protocols and table-
The wireless sensor networks have been extensively deployed and researched. One of the major issues in wireless sensor networks is a developing energy-efficient clustering protocol. Clustering algorithm provides an effective way to prolong the lifetime of a wireless sensor networks. In the paper, we compare several clustering protocols which significantly affect a balancing of energy consumption. And we propose an Energy-Efficient Distributed Unequal Clustering (EEDUC) algorithm which provides a
Taking care of individual pigs is important in the management of a group-housed pig farm. However, this is nearly impossible in a large-scale pig farm owing to the shortage of farm workers. Therefore, we propose an automatic monitoring method in this study to solve the management problem of a large-scale pig farm. Particularly, we aim to detect undergrown pigs in group-housed pig rooms by using deep-learning-based computer vision techniques. Because the typical deep learning techniques require a
Automated pig monitoring is an important issue in the surveillance environment of a pig farm. For a large-scale pig farm in particular, practical issues such as monitoring cost should be considered but such consideration based on low-cost embedded boards has not yet been reported. Since low-cost embedded boards have more limited computing power than typical PCs and have tradeoffs between execution speed and accuracy, achieving fast and accurate detection of individual pigs for “on-device” pig mo
As mobile networking continues to experience increasing popularity, the need to connect large numbers of wireless devices will become more prevalent. Many recent proposals for ad hoc routing have certain characteristics which may limit their scalability to large networks. This paper examines five different combinations of modifications which may be incorporated into virtually any on-demand protocol in order to improve its scalability. The scalability of current on-demand routing protocols is eva
The skin is a very suitable organ for the induction of immune responses to vaccine antigens. Antigen delivery systems to the skin by needle and syringe directly deposit the antigen into the epidermal-dermal compartment, one of the most immunocompetent sites due to the presence of professional antigen-presenting cells aimed at the induction of antigen-specific T cells. In this study, we analyzed the amount of ovalbumin as an antigen delivered to the skin by a microneedle. When ovalbumin protein a
