Professor Sung-won Chae's research lab focuses on the intersection of otolaryngology, aging, and systemic health, with key research directions including the impact of lifestyle factors—such as smoking—on hearing impairment, the role of systemic diseases (e.g., chronic myelogenous leukemia) in sudden sensorineural hearing loss, and the association between hearing loss and postural instability in older adults. The lab also investigates inflammatory pathways in otologic conditions, particularly the anti-inflammatory effects of compounds like CAPE on cytokine production, and conducts epidemiological studies on antibiotic-resistant pathogens in chronic ear infections. These multidisciplinary efforts aim to uncover biological mechanisms linking sensory function, systemic disease, and age-related physical decline.

Inhibitory effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) on LPS-induced inflammation of human middle ear epithelial cells

CAPE significantly inhibited LPS-induced up-regulation of TNF-alpha in a dose-dependent manner. IL-8 production by LPS was significantly suppressed by the CAPE pretreatment. Furthermore, LPS-induced IkappaB-alpha degradation was suppressed by the CAPE pretreatment.
