Professor Sung Woo Cho's research lab specializes in cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, with a focus on understanding the pathophysiology, clinical features, and long-term outcomes of conditions such as pacing-induced cardiomyopathy, coronary vasospasm, and chronic rhinosinusitis with distinct inflammatory endotypes. The lab employs advanced clinical and analytical methods—including echocardiography, invasive hemodynamic testing, and unsupervised machine learning on polysomnographic data—to identify disease phenotypes and predictors. A key research direction involves dissecting immune-mediated mechanisms in inflammatory airway and heart diseases, particularly the role of type 2 immunity and eosinophilia in disease heterogeneity and prognosis.

15AIMS: We investigated the clinical features, predictors, and long-term prognosis of pacing-induced cardiomyopathy (PiCM). METHODS AND RESULTS: From a retrospective analysis of 1418 consecutive pacemaker patients, 618 were found to have a preserved baseline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), follow-up echocardiographic data, and no history of heart failure (HF). PiCM was defined as a reduction in LVEF (< 50%) along with either (i) a ≥ 10% decrease in LVEF, or (ii) new-onset regional wall
Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can be classified according to the presence of a nasal polyp (NP): CRS with NP (CRSwNP) and CRS without NP (CRSsNP). CRSwNP has characteristics with high infiltration of tissue eosinophilia with a burst of Th2 inflammatory cytokine. However recent findings in Eastern Asia countries suggest that CRSwNP can be divided according to the presence of tissue eosinophilia. Thus, CRSwNP can be classified into eosinophilic and noneosinophilic. Eosinophilic CRSwNP seems to have
BACKGROUND: Coronary vasospasm is an important pathogenesis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, the clinical features and prognosis of vasospastic angina (VA) patients presenting with ACS (VAACS) are still unclear. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics and long-term outcomes of VAACS patients without significant coronary artery stenosis. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 986 VA patients confirmed by ergonovine provocation test were analyzed. VAACS was defined as VA patients visi
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a major determinant of long-term prognosis in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD). We investigated the predictors of CAD in patients with lower extremity PAD.A total of 107 patients with PAD who underwent peripheral and simultaneous coronary angiography were reviewed. PAD was defined as (≥ 50%) stenosis associated with claudication or critical limb ischemia. PAD was divided into proximal and distal lesions. CAD was defined as angiographically significan
Conventionally, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) is used to define and categorize the severity of obstructive sleep apnea. However, routine polysomnography (PSG) includes multiple parameters for assessing the severity of obstructive sleep apnea. The goal of this study is to identify and categorize obstructive sleep apnea phenotypes using unsupervised learning methods from routine PSG data. We identified four clusters from 4,603 patients by using 29 PSG variable and arranged according to their mean AHI
Photoaffinity labeling with [gamma-32P]8N3GTP (8-azidoguanosine triphosphate) was used to identify the guanine binding peptides of the GTT binding site within two types of glutamate dehydrogenase isoproteins (GDH I and GDH II) isolated from bovine brain. 8N3GTP, without photolysis, mimicked the inhibitory properties of GTP on GDH I and GDH II activities. Saturation of photoinsertion of GDH isoproteins revealed an apparent Kd of 8 microM (GDH I) and 24 microM (GDH II) for [gamma-32P]8N3GTP. Ion e
BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is a multidimensional disease. In this study, we performed an unsupervised cluster analysis of CRSwNP using routinely available clinical markers. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of patients treated with endoscopic sinus surgery due to medically intractable bilateral CRSwNP from 2009 to 2017. Unsupervised cluster analysis was performed using a patient's clinical features, including age, peripheral blood eosinophil, tissue
In this cross-sectional study, recorded sleep breathing sounds using a smartphone were used to create reasonably accurate OSA prediction models. Future research should focus on real-life recordings using various smartphone devices.
Primary cardiac lymphomas (PCL) are extremely rare. Clinical manifestations may be variable and are attributed to location. Here, we report on a case of PCL presenting with atrioventricular (AV) block. A 55 year-old male had experienced chest discomfort with unexplained dyspnea and night sweating. His initial electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed a first degree AV block. Along with worsening chest discomfort and dyspnea, his ECG changed to show second degree AV block (Mobitz type I).
