研究室紹介
Professor WanHee Kim's research lab specializes in regenerative medicine and veterinary surgical innovation, with a focus on tissue engineering and stem cell therapy for bone regeneration. The lab investigates the use of acellular dermal matrices (ADM) combined with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to enhance bone repair in animal models. Additionally, the lab explores minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as single-port retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy, to improve outcomes in canine surgery. The integration of biomaterials, stem cells, and advanced imaging techniques underpins the lab’s translational approach to veterinary and comparative medicine.

This study investigates the feasibility of using an adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell (ASC)-seeded acellular dermal matrix (ADM) along with low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to repair bone defect in athymic nude mice. Critical-sized calvarial defects were treated either with ADM, ADM/LLLT, ADM/ASCs, or ADM/ASCs/LLLT. In micro-computed tomography scans, the ADM/ASCs and the ADM/ASCs/LLLT groups showed remarkable bone formation after 14 days. Additionally, bone regeneration in the ADM/ASCs/LLLT g
Leptin and its receptor play several physiological roles in the canine gallbladder, and the dysregulation of leptin might play a role in the pathogenesis of gallbladder diseases such as gallbladder mucocele. Previous studies revealed a positive association between hyperlipidemia and gallstones in humans. However, the latter is still unclear in dogs with cholelithiasis. In this study, we examined the differences in leptin, leptin receptor, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels between health
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the feasibility of single-port retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (SPRA) in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: A pilot experimental study. ANIMALS: Eight healthy beagle dogs. METHODS: SPRA was performed on the left and right sides (4 dogs each). Resection of the adrenal gland was performed through a SILS port using a retroperitoneal approach. Operative time was defined from skin incision to the completion of skin suture. Postoperative pain was evaluated by using 3 pain scores. Integrity
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of acellular dermal matrix (ADM) as a delivery carrier of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) on bone regeneration in athymic murine calvarial bone defect. Paired-critical size defects in nude rat skull were made. The right-side defects received ASCs/ADM or only ADM, whereas the left-side defect was not treated. In 3D images, new bone formation in the ASCs/ADM group was apparent at 4 wk, but in the ADM group at 8 wk. At 4 and 8 wk, bo
Objective To develop and describe a laparoscopic retroperitoneal access technique, investigate working space establishment, and describe the surgical anatomy in the retroperitoneal space as an initial step for clinical application of retroperitoneal laparoscopy in dogs. Study Design Cadaveric and experimental study. Animals Cadaveric (n=8) and healthy (n=6) adult dogs. Methods The retroperitoneal access technique was developed in 3 cadavers based on the human technique and transperitoneal observ
BACKGROUND: Ectopic Cushing's syndrome (ECS) associated with malignant tumors, such as small cell lung carcinoma, bronchial carcinoids, and pheochromocytoma, has been reported in human medicine. However, ECS related to pheochromocytoma has not been reported in dogs. CASE PRESENTATION: An 11-year-old castrated, male Scottish terrier was diagnosed with a left adrenal mass. Cushing's syndrome was suspected based on clinical signs, including pot belly, polyuria, polydipsia, bilateral alopecia, recur
Accurate state-of-health (SoH) prediction of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) is a critical step in LiBs health prognostics to ensure its reliable operation and safety. Recently, there has been an increase in graph neural network (GNN) adaptation across many fields including LiBs health prognostics, which have shown benefits of spatio-temporal-based neural networks over the traditional counterparts. However, many of these studies have been shown to rely on discharge profiles as part of their input f
Received signal strength indication method enables flexible positioning without additional hardware installation and modification from communication resources. The expectation value of distance is changed due to the shadow fading. The effects of shadow fading in indoor RSSI ranging and convergence with pedestrian dead reckoning by using Extended Kalman Filter are presented. The fusion of pedestrian dead reckoning and RSSI ranging simulation shows that the compensation Shadow Fading effect has sl
Since the discovery of klotho as an anti-aging gene, its association with tumors has been studied. Several previous studies have reported the down-expression of klotho in various human cancers, and much of its mechanism has been revealed. Nonetheless, the significance of klotho in canine mammary gland tumors is not yet known. This study aimed to determine whether klotho is expressed within normal canine mammary glands and whether the expression changes in benign and malignant tumors. Using immun
The hormone leptin is produced by mature adipocytes and plays an important role in regulating food intake and energy metabolism through its interaction with the leptin receptor. In addition to roles in obesity and obesity-related diseases, leptin has been reported to affect the components and secretion of bile in leptin-deficient mice. Furthermore, gallbladder diseases such as cholelithiasis are known to be associated with serum leptin concentrations in humans. We hypothesized that the canine ga
The plant defense responses to microbial infection are tightly regulated and integrated with the developmental program for optimal resources allocation. Notably, the defense- associated hormone salicylic acid (SA) acts as a promoter of flowering while several plant pathogens actively target the flowering signaling pathway to promote their virulence or dissemination. Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum inject tens of effectors in the host cells that collectively promote bacterial proliferation in plant
