Professor Woo Il Kwon's research lab specializes in clinical and translational oncology, with a primary focus on gastrointestinal malignancies such as pancreatic and gallbladder cancer. The lab investigates neoadjuvant treatment strategies, surgical outcomes, and prognostic factors in borderline resectable and locally advanced pancreatic cancer, as well as tumor characteristics and recurrence patterns in intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) and gallbladder polyps. The lab also contributes to control theory applications in engineering, particularly in stabilizing time-varying and differential-difference systems, demonstrating a unique interdisciplinary approach. Their work bridges clinical oncology with systems engineering to improve patient outcomes through evidence-based treatment protocols and mathematical modeling.

Abstract A stabilizing control design for general linear time varying systems is presented and analysed. The control is a state-feedback law with gains determined by a standard method employed in optimal regulator problems. The considered cost function is, however, dynamically redefined over a fixed depth horizon. The method is shown to yield a stable closed-loop system and computationally efficient recursions for the feedback gain are provided
Pancreatic IPMNs recur in 10.7% of patients. Recurrence is correlated with the degree of dysplasia, and 5.4% of patients with benign or noninvasive IPMN have recurrences including distant metastasis. Thorough postoperative surveillance is needed not only for patients with invasive IPMN but also for those with benign or noninvasive IPMN, especially for patients with high-grade dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: In gallbladder cancer, stage T2 is subdivided by tumour location into lesions on the peritoneal side (T2a) or hepatic side (T2b). For tumours on the peritoneal side (T2a), it has been suggested that liver resection may be omitted without compromising the prognosis. However, data to validate this argument are lacking.
