Professor Yang-hyun Kim's research lab focuses on population health and preventive medicine, with a strong emphasis on the interplay between anthropometric measures, metabolic health, and long-term outcomes such as mortality and chronic disease risk. The lab investigates key determinants of health across the Korean population, including abdominal obesity (waist circumference), body composition, dental health, and bone metabolism, often integrating large-scale national health datasets. Research directions span epidemiological studies on obesity-related comorbidities, quality of life, and the impact of lifestyle factors such as weight change and tooth retention on health outcomes. The lab also explores neurological and musculoskeletal implications of anatomical variations, such as transitional vertebrae, in clinical settings.

Higher WC is positively associated with increased mortality; therefore, we examined the relationship between WC and mortality in Korean populations with the interaction of body mass index (BMI) and WC for mortality. METHODS: A total of 23,263,878 subjects (men = 11,813,850 and women = 11,450,028) who were older than 20 years and underwent the National Health Insurance Service h
Weight change over 4 years showed a reverse J-shaped all-cause mortality curve, independent of BMI status. Weight loss was associated with a greater risk of mortality than was weight gain.
OBJECTIVES/AIMS: With the Euro-Qol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) system, we investigated the relationship between the number of remaining teeth and QoL using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 2010-2012. A total of 17,417 participants, more than 19 years old, were finally included in this study (men = 7394 and women = 10,023). Through this study, we have discovered that the remaining teeth affect overall health and that the fewer number of them may indicate a
BACKGROUND: The presence of a transitional vertebra can create difficulty in identifying the lumbar level corresponding to an exiting nerve root at the time of a spinal nerve block. We investigated the possibility that the muscle innervation pattern and sensory dermatomes of the lumbar nerve roots are altered when a lumbosacral transitional vertebra is present using electrical stimulation. METHODS: We determined the existence of transitional vertebrae using Castellvi's criteria. Patients having
OBJECTIVE: There is a controversy over the association between obesity and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in people with or without type 2 diabetes; therefore, we examined the effect of BMI on the risk of ESRD according to glycemic status in the Korean population. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: The study monitored 9,969,848 participants who underwent a National Health Insurance Service health checkup in 2009 from baseline to the date of diagnosis of ESRD during a follow-up period of ∼8.2 years. Ob
This study examined the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and dyslipidemia in South Korean men. Data from 6,300 men who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008 to 2010 were analyzed, including serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglyceride (TG) after 8 hours of fasting and mean BMD measured at the lumbar spine (LS), total hip (TH), and f
Subjects with higher SES had more remaining teeth than subjects with lower SES. Preserving remaining teeth should be encouraged in subjects with low SES by promoting good oral-health behavior and encouraging more oral-health checkups.
A total of 3589 adults (1511 men and 2078 women aged over 40 years) from the 2012 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included and divided into 3 groups according to the number of remaining teeth (0-19, 20-27, and 28). We recorded the number of remaining teeth and measured MS components such as waist circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, serum high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, and triglyceride concentration. We also calculated t
Based on the Obesity Fact Sheet 2016, a strategy for reducing the prevalence of obesity is needed, especially in Korean men.
Our study showed a strong association between dipstick proteinuria and all-cause mortality in this nationwide population-based cohort in South Korea.
