研究室紹介

Professor Yi, K H's research lab focuses on thyroid cancer epidemiology, molecular oncology, and clinical outcomes, with a particular emphasis on differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). The lab investigates the impact of increased detection through ultrasonography, genetic mutations (such as TERT, BRAF, and RAS), and their implications for prognosis and treatment strategies. Research also explores long-term survival, metastatic patterns—especially lung metastasis—and the role of risk stratification in guiding clinical decision-making. The lab contributes to evidence-based guidelines, particularly in refining surgical and surveillance approaches for low- and intermediate-risk DTC patients.

The incidence of thyroid cancer has rapidly increased, with a decrease in tumors of large size, LN involvement, and ETE, although the decreasing rates of LN involvement and ETE were not as prominent as decreasing rates of large size tumors. The mortality and recurrence rates have also decreased. Future long-term follow-up of patients diagnosed in the most recent decade is needed to confirm the prognostic characteristics of Korean PTC patients.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggest that mutations in the promoter of the gene encoding telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) affect thyroid cancer outcomes. METHODS: In all, 551 patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) enrolled in this study. The median follow-up duration was 4.8 years (interquartile range, 3.4-10.6 years). RESULTS: TERT promoter mutations were detected in 25 DTCs (4.5%): 2.8% in neither BRAF-mutated nor RAS-mutated tumors, 4.8% in BRAF-mutated tumors, and 11.3% in RA

The high prevalence of thyroid nodules in people who underwent thyroid US at a health checkup suggests that increased detection of thyroid nodules resulted in an increased prevalence in the general population. However, metabolic disturbances may also have contributed to the increase in thyroid nodule prevalence in Korea.

The Revised 2016 Korean Thyroid Association Guidelines for Thyroid Nodules and Cancers: Differences from the 2015 American Thyroid Association Guidelines

SJR Q1Endocrinology and MetabolismOA

Increased detection of thyroid nodules using high-resolution ultrasonography has resulted in a world-wide increase in the incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). Despite the steep increase in its incidence, the age-standardized mortality rate of thyroid cancer has remained stable, which leads toward a trend of more conservative treatment. The latest American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines for thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer revised in 2015 suggested that fine needle aspiration

BACKGROUND: Distant metastasis, generally to lung and bone, is rare in differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) and the prognosis is still elusive. We investigated long-term outcomes of lung metastasis in DTC patients and its prognostic factors. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of 4572 patients who underwent surgery for DTC from 1962 to 2009 at Seoul National University Hospital. Among them, 164 patients were identified with lung metastasis and 152 patients were enrolled in the final

A second course of ATD can be considered for GD patients after the first relapse because the chance of remission and the relapse rate are similar to the one after the first ATD treatment course. For GD patients with more than two relapses, or with an ATD treatment duration of more than four to five years, low-dose maintenance of ATD or ablative treatment needs to be considered.

Thyroid cancer is the most common malignancy in Korea; in 2012, about 44,000 new cases (19.6% of all malignancies) were registered and the estimated age-standardized incidence rate of thyroid cancer was 73.6 per 100,000 (17.3 and 88.6 per 100,000 in men and women, respectively). Despite the steep increase in its incidence, the age-standardized mortality rate of thyroid cancer has remained stable and 10-year relative survival rate is 99.2%. The aim of this study was to evaluate preoperatively identifiable clinical and ultrasonographic characteristics associated with central lymph node metastasis (CLNM) in clinically node negative papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients. Records of the patients who underwent thyroidectomy with prophylactic central lymph node dissection due to clinically node negative PTC (size, 1.0-3.0 cm) were reviewed. Of a total of 174 patients, 71 (40.8%) had CLNMs. CLNM was more associated with capsule invas

BACKGRUOUND: This study aimed to investigate the changes of incidence and treatment of choice for hyperthyroidism from 2003 to 2018 and explore the treatment-related complications and concomitant comorbidities in South Korea using data from the National Health Insurance Service. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study. Hyperthyroidism was defined as a case having two or more diagnostic codes of thyrotoxicosis, with antithyroid drug intake for more than 6 months. RESULTS: The average
