研究室紹介

Professor Yoo-Jin Kwon's research lab focuses on the intersection of nutrition, metabolic health, and chronic disease prevention, with a strong emphasis on population-based epidemiological studies. The lab investigates the role of dietary patterns, oxidative stress, and metabolic markers in the development of hypertension, periodontitis, and all-cause mortality. Key research directions include the impact of macronutrient intake on longevity, the role of endogenous antioxidants, and the use of biomarkers such as the oxidative balance score and TyG index in assessing metabolic dysfunction. The lab leverages large-scale national cohort data from South Korea to derive evidence-based insights for public health interventions.

Be Selfish and Avoid Dilemmas
Yu‐Jin Kwon, Dohyun Kim, Yunmok Son, Eugene Y. Vasserman, Yongdae Kim

In the Bitcoin system, participants are rewarded for solving cryptographic puzzles. In order to receive more consistent rewards over time, some participants organize mining pools and split the rewards from the pool in proportion to each participant's contribution. However, several attacks threaten the ability to participate in pools. The block withholding (BWH) attack makes the pool reward system unfair by letting malicious participants receive unearned wages while only pretending to contribute

A Review of the Pharmacological Efficacy and Safety of Licorice Root from Corroborative Clinical Trial Findings
Yu‐Jin Kwon, Da‐Hye Son, Tae‐Ha Chung, Yong‐Jae Lee
SJR Q3Journal of Medicinal FoodOA

Since ancient times, licorice, the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, has been known to have a wide spectrum of therapeutic effects. Glycyrrhizin is cleaved to glycyrrhizic acid, which is subsequently converted to glycyrrhetic acid by human intestinal microflora. Glycyrrhetic acid is a potent inhibitor of 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11β-HSD) and performs a range of corticosteroid-like activities. The pharmacologic effects of licorice contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antio

Association between oxidative balance score and new-onset hypertension in adults: A community-based prospective cohort study
Jun‐Hyuk Lee, Da‐Hye Son, Yu‐Jin Kwon
SJR Q1Frontiers in NutritionOA

Introduction: Oxidative stress plays a key role in the pathophysiology of hypertension development. The oxidative balance score (OBS) comprises dietary and lifestyle pro- and anti-oxidant components and reflects the overall oxidative stress burden. We aimed to evaluate the association between the OBS and new-onset hypertension (HTN) using large, community-based, prospective Korean cohort data. Methods: Among 10,030 participants aged 40-69 years included in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Stud

Comparison of the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, triglyceride to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) associated with periodontitis in Korean adults

SJR Q1Therapeutic Advances in Chronic DiseaseOA

Background: Periodontitis is one of the most common diseases associated with the oral cavity. Previous studies have suggested that there is an association between periodontitis and metabolic dysfunction. Recently, the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) ratio, and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) index have been identified as useful markers for assessing insulin resistance. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship betw

Impossibility of Full Decentralization in Permissionless Blockchains
Yu‐Jin Kwon, Jian Liu, Minjeong Kim, Dawn Song, Yongdae Kim

Bitcoin uses the proof-of-work (PoW) mechanism where nodes earn rewards in return for the use of their computing resources. Although this incentive system has attracted many participants, power has, at the same time, been significantly biased towards a few nodes, called mining pools. In addition, poor decentralization appears not only in PoW-based coins but also in coins that adopt proof-of-stake (PoS) and delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) mechanisms.

Associating Intake Proportion of Carbohydrate, Fat, and Protein with All-Cause Mortality in Korean Adults
Yu‐Jin Kwon, Hye Sun Lee, Ju-Young Park, Ji‐Won Lee
SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Determining the ideal ratio of macronutrients for increasing life expectancy remains a high priority in nutrition research. We aim to investigate the association between carbohydrate, fat, and protein intake and all-cause mortality in Koreans. This cohort study investigated 42,192 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) linked with causes of death data (2007–2015). Hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated using the multivariable Cox proportional regressi

Bitcoin vs. Bitcoin Cash: Coexistence or Downfall of Bitcoin Cash?
Yu‐Jin Kwon, Hyoungshick Kim, Jinwoo Shin, Yongdae Kim
OA

Bitcoin has become the most popular cryptocurrency based on a peer-to-peer network. In Aug. 2017, Bitcoin was split into the original Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH). Since then, miners have had a choice between BTC and BCH mining because they have compatible proof-of-work algorithms. Therefore, they can freely choose which coin to mine for higher profit, where the profitability depends on both the coin price and mining difficulty. Some miners can immediately switch the coin to mine only wh

Inverse Association between Oxidative Balance Score and Incident Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Yu‐Jin Kwon, Hye-Min Park, Jun‐Hyuk Lee
SJR Q1NutrientsOA

Mitigating the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be achieved through the maintenance of a healthy weight, the adoption of a healthy diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. The oxidative balance score (OBS), an integrated measure of pro- and antioxidant exposure conditions, represents an individual's overall oxidative balance status. This study aimed to evaluate the association between OBS and T2DM incidence using data from a large, community-based, prospective cohort study. Da

Development and Validation of a Questionnaire to Measure Adherence to the Mediterranean Diet in Korean Adults

SJR Q1NutrientsOA

The Mediterranean diet (MD) has beneficial effects on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and mortality. Although various attempts have been made for estimating adherence to the MD using diet quality indices, few studies involving validated questionnaires for estimating adherence have been performed in Asian populations. We aimed to develop and validate the Korean version of the Mediterranean Diet Adherence Screener (K-MEDAS) by including 211 participants that visited health check-up centers and 11
