研究室紹介

Professor Young Ho Choi's research lab specializes in translational and experimental medicine, with a focus on interventional radiology, urological physiology, and reproductive biotechnology. The lab investigates minimally invasive techniques for managing gastrointestinal and urological disorders, including endovascular therapies for variceal bleeding and ureteral flow dynamics in pathological conditions. It also conducts advanced in vitro studies on gamete physiology and oocyte maturation, aiming to improve assisted reproductive technologies in equine and other species. The integration of clinical outcomes with mechanistic biological research defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.

Balloon-Occluded Retrograde Transvenous Obliteration for Gastric Variceal Bleeding: Its Feasibility Compared with Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt

SJR Q1Korean Journal of RadiologyOA

BRTO can effectively control active gastric variceal bleeding, and because of immediate hemostasis, the absence of rebleeding, and improved liver function, is a good alternative to TIPS in patients in whom such bleeding, accompanied by gastrorenal shunt, occurs.

Effect of capacitation of stallion sperm with polyvinylalcohol or bovine serum albumin on penetration of bovine zona-free or partially zona-removed equine oocytes1

SJR Q1Journal of Animal Science

Experiments were conducted to study effects of macromolecules on stallion sperm capacitation and fertilization as determined by penetration of bovine zona-free and equine partially zona-removed oocytes. Stallion sperm were capacitated in TYH medium (modified Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate) supplemented with either 1 mg/mL of polyvinylalcohol (PVA) or 4 mg/mL of BSA. Capacitation was induced with 8 bromoadenosine cyclic monophosphate (8BrcAMP; 0.5 mM) alone or in combination with 0.1 microM of ionomyci

Computational and Mathematical Methods in MedicineOA

The ureter provides a way for urine to flow from the kidney to the bladder. Peristalsis in the ureter partially forces the urine flow, along with hydrostatic pressure. Ureteral diseases and a double J stent, which is commonly inserted in a ureteral stenosis or occlusion, disturb normal peristalsis. Ineffective or no peristalsis could make the contour of the ureter a tube, a funnel, or a combination of the two. In this study, we investigated urine flow in the abnormal situation. We made three dif

This study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro development of equine oocytes with compact cumuli that had been subjected to a period of meiotic suppression with roscovitine before in vitro maturation. In experiment 1, oocytes were recovered from slaughterhouse-derived ovaries and held in M199 + 10% fetal bovine serum containing 66 microM roscovitine with or without an overlay of mineral oil in 5% CO2 in air at 38.2 degrees C for 16-18 or 24 h. No oocytes treated with roscovitine in the absenc

The Quality of Life After Bar Removal in Patients After the Nuss Procedure for Pectus Excavatum
Hyun Koo Kim, Jae Hoon Shim, Kyu Sun Choi, Young Ho Choi
SJR Q1World Journal of SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to evaluate the outcome of patients who had the Nuss procedure for repair of pectus excavatum. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients (26 male, 13 female) of 61 (63.9%) who had bar removal after the Nuss procedure agreed to participate in an interview. All patients and their parents were asked to complete a questionnaire. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 6.8±3.23 years at the time of the Nuss procedure, 9.1±3.54 at bar removal, and 12.0±3.28 when the questi

SJR Q1World Journal of Surgery

BACKGROUND: The morbidity and mortality of anastomotic complications after esophagectomy have gradually decreased in recent years. However, swallowing difficulties and reflux continue to burden patients jeopardizing their quality of life. In the present study we performed endoscopic evaluation of the outcomes of esophagogastrostomy by analyzing the presence of anastomotic stenosis and reflux esophagitis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out on 74 patients who underwent esophagogastr

SJR Q3Technology and Health CareOA

Ureteral stenosis presents with a narrowing in the ureter, due to an intrinsic or extrinsic ureteral disease, such as ureter cancer or retroperitoneal fibrosis. The placement of a double J stent in the upper urinary system is one of the most common treatments of ureteral stenosis, along with the insertion of a percutaneous nephrostomy tube into the renal pelvis. The effect that the side holes in a double J stent have on urine flow has been evaluated in a few studies using straight ureter models.

Urine flow analysis using double J stents of various sizes in in vitro ureter models
Kyung‐Wuk Kim, Hyoung‐Ho Kim, Young Ho Choi, Seung Bae Lee, Yasutaka Baba
SJR Q2International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering

A double J stent (DJS) is used to alleviate the congestion of urine in the upper urinary tract when there is ureteral stenosis, which causes the interruption of normal urine flow and results in renal failure. The purpose of placing DJSs is to ensure sufficient urine flow in the ureter, but the DJS acts as a foreign body in the urinary system and sometimes acts as an obstacle in achieving sufficient urine flow. Here, to evaluate the performance of various sizes of DJSs, 5Fr (1.666 mm) to 8Fr (2.6
