Professor Young-Kyu Eun's research lab focuses on translational and molecular oncology, particularly in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The lab investigates the role of key oncogenes such as SOX2 in tumor progression and treatment response, with a strong emphasis on gene expression signatures, genomic alterations, and their clinical implications. Additionally, the lab explores the tumor microenvironment through the lens of the oral microbiome and its influence on cancer metastasis and immune modulation. A significant component of the research involves developing non-invasive biomarkers—such as salivary pepsin and microbial signatures—for early detection and monitoring of laryngopharyngeal reflux and oral cancer. The lab integrates multi-omics approaches, clinical studies, and translational models to advance precision medicine in head and neck cancers.

Intraoral removal of proximal submandibular stones has several advantages over SMG resection. Based on our results, we suggest that our intraoral removal method be selected as the primary procedure for the removal of proximal submandibular stones rather than SMG resection.

In patients with LPR, age seems to affect the subjective symptoms and resulting impact on quality of life but not the laryngeal findings. Furthermore, older patients are more likely not to respond to PPI therapy than younger patients.

BACKGROUND: Human carbonyl reductase 1 (CBR1) plays major roles in protecting cells against cellular damage resulting from oxidative stress. Although CBR1-mediated detoxification of oxidative materials increased by stressful conditions including hypoxia, neuronal degenerative disorders, and other circumstances generating reactive oxide is well documented, the role of CBR1 under ionising radiation (IR) is still unclear.
