Professor Young-won Lim's research lab specializes in environmental microbiology, focusing on fungal and bacterial communities in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, particularly in intertidal and forest environments. The lab employs high-throughput sequencing techniques such as pyrosequencing and ITS-NGS to explore microbial diversity, community structure, and functional roles in ecological processes like decomposition, pollutant degradation, and symbiotic interactions. A key research direction involves understanding microbial interactions—especially with ectomycorrhizal fungi like Tricholoma matsutake—and their impact on soil health and ecosystem functioning. The lab also investigates the ecological and biotechnological potential of microbial isolates, including halotolerant fungi and bacteria associated with fungi.

15Pyrosequencing, a non-electrophoretic method of DNA sequencing, was used to investigate the extensive fungal community in soils of three islands in the Yellow Sea of Korea, between Korea and China. Tricholoma matsutake, the pine mushroom, is a valuable forest product with high economic value in Asia, and plays an important ecological role as an ectomycorrhizal fungus.
