Professor Yu Mi Wei's research lab specializes in infectious diseases, with a focus on antimicrobial resistance, emerging pathogens, and clinical microbiology. The lab investigates multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, including carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa and nontuberculous mycobacteria, as well as rare but significant pathogens like Ochrobactrum anthropi. Their work emphasizes clinical predictors of disease severity, biomarkers for early risk stratification, and the epidemiology of emerging infections such as severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in endemic regions.

To determine prevalence of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome in South Korea, we examined serum samples from patients with fever and insect bite history in scrub typhus-endemic areas. During the 2013 scrub typhus season, prevalence of this syndrome among patients suspected of having scrub typhus was high (23.0%), suggesting possible co-infection.
We report a case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis from Ochrobactrum anthropi. O. anthropi is recognized as an emerging pathogen in immunocompromised patients. In contrast to most previously described cases, the patient reported here had no indwelling catheter. To our knowledge, no case of O. anthropi spontaneous bacterial peritonitis has been reported in the medical literature until now.
Serum albumin levels and glucose levels on admission were predictors of the need IRVS in adult patients with H1N1. Based on these findings, the level of albumin at presentation may serve as a novel and simple early biomarker to identify patients at high risk for a complicated clinical course of disease.
