Professor Yun-Kyung Jang's research lab focuses on the intersection of systemic inflammation, metabolic health, and cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases. Her team investigates the role of oral hygiene and periodontal disease as modifiable risk factors for stroke and heart failure, while also exploring metabolic markers—such as the TyG index—and microbiota composition in predicting disease severity and outcomes in conditions like COVID-19 and acute ischemic stroke. The lab employs large-scale population-based cohorts and preclinical models to uncover novel pathophysiological mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.

15Dapagliflozin, a new type of drug used to treat diabetes mellitus (DM), is a sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. Although some studies showed that SGLT2 inhibition attenuated reactive oxygen generation in diabetic kidney the role of SGLT2 inhibition is unknown. We evaluated whether SLT2 inhibition has renoprotective effects in ischemia-reperfusion (IR) models. We evaluated whether dapagliflozin reduces renal damage in IR mice model. In addition, hypoxic HK2 cells were treated with
Background and Purpose— Effective rescue treatment has not yet been suggested in patients with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) failure. This study aimed to test whether rescue stenting (RS) improved clinical outcomes in MT-failed patients. Methods— This is a retrospective analysis of the cohorts of the 16 comprehensive stroke centers between September 2010 and December 2015. We identified the patients who underwent MT but failed to recanalize intracranial internal carotid artery or middle cerebral
AIMS: Poor oral hygiene can provoke transient bacteremia and systemic inflammation, a mediator of atrial fibrillation and heart failure. This study aims to investigate association of oral hygiene indicators with atrial fibrillation and heart failure risk in Korea. METHODS: We included 161,286 subjects from the National Health Insurance System-Health Screening Cohort who had no missing data for demographics, past history, or laboratory findings. They had no history of atrial fibrillation, heart f
BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease or poor oral hygiene may lead to local infection, inflammation, and systemic inflammatory reactions, which are important mediators of development of stroke. We aimed to investigate the association of oral hygiene with risk of stroke in a nationwide population-based cohort. METHODS: From Korean National Health Insurance System-Health Screening Cohort, 206,602 participants without missing data regarding demographic information, medical history, or blood/urine examin
Currently, few studies are reported on the composition of microbiota in stroke patients and the association with stroke prognosis. This study investigated the differing microbiota composition in stroke patients and confirmed the association of microbiota composition with poor functional outcome. Between January of 2018 and December of 2019, 198 patients with acute cerebral infarction were included in this study. For the case-control study, age and sex-matched normal healthy subjects (n = 200) we
In COVID-19 infected patients, high TyG index was associated with increased risk for severe complications. TyG index might be useful predictor for the severity of COVID-19 infection.
Insulin resistance is associated with the occurrence of stroke and atherosclerotic disease. However, the relationship between insulin resistance and the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke in non-diabetic patients is unclear. We hypothesized that insulin resistance might affect short-term functional recovery after acute ischemic stroke in non-diabetic patients. Between May 2014 and December 2016, 1377 consecutive patients with acute ischemic stroke were enrolled from a prospectively maintained st
Erythropoietin exerts renoprotective effects in an experimental unilateral ureteral obstruction rat model via anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory actions.
Oral diseases, such as periodontitis and dental caries, can cause systemic inflammation as well as local effects, which is an important contributing factor for obesity. We aimed to investigate the change in body mass index (BMI) according to the presence of periodontitis and oral hygiene indicators. This study enrolled 110,068 participants from the national health screening cohort in Korea from 2009–2010 who underwent an oral health checkup. As oral hygiene indicators, the presence of periodonti
Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for stroke, following hypertension, diabetes, and smoking, and is an important risk factor for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease, including stroke. Recent guidelines recommend considering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C)-lowering therapies, such as statins (preferably), ezetimibe, or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors to prevent the occurrence or recurrence of stroke

BACKGROUND: Research on the association of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) with prognosis in COVID-19 has been limited. We investigated the association between the fatty liver index (FLI), a non-invasive and simple marker of NAFLD, and the severe complications of COVID-19 patients in South Korea. METHODS: We included 3122 COVID-19-positive patients from the nationwide COVID-19 cohort dataset in South Korea between January and June 2020. The FLI was calculated using triglyceride, body m
ABSTRACT: Oral diseases or poor oral hygiene have close connections with systemic inflammatory reaction, which is one of major mechanism in the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD). We conducted a research assuming that better oral hygiene care would be negatively related with the risk of developing new-onset CKD.From 2003 to 2004, a total of 158,495 participants from the Korean national health insurance data sharing service which provides health screening data including variables as age,
Periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are inflammatory diseases that share many similarities. We aimed to investigate the associations of periodontitis and oral hygiene status and behaviors with RA in a nationwide general population cohort. Participants from the National Health Screening cohort database of Korea who underwent oral health screening by dentists between 2003 and 2004 were included. The occurrence of RA was analyzed according to the presence of periodontitis, oral health exami
