We investigated the impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on microbial communities in wetland sediment and seawater samples collected from sites along the Gulf shore. Based on GC/MS analysis, the sediment from Bay Jimmy, LA had detectable signs of hydrocarbon contamination, identified as n-alkanes in the GC/MS spectrum similar to that of the Deepwater Horizon source oil (MC-252). To identify changes in microbial assemblage structure and functional diversity in response to hydrocarbon contami
A gold nanoparticle-quenched graphene quantum dot-based aptasensor was developed to perform clustered detection of 11 phthalic acid esters (PAEs). The binding of the target PAEs to the aptasensor frees the graphene quantum dots that are otherwise quenched by the carrier gold nanoparticle. The resultant fluorescence upon excitation is proportional to the number of freed graphene quantum dots and hence the target PAE concentration. The synthesis of the proposed aptasensor was first verified step-b
DNA hybridization is an important step for a number of bioassays such as fluorescence in situ hybridization, microarrays, as well as the NanoGene assay. Denaturation and fragmentation of genomic DNA are two critical pretreatments for DNA hybridization. However, no thorough and systematic characterization on denaturation and fragmentation has been carried out for the NanoGene assay so far. In this study, we investigated the denaturation and fragmentation of the bacterial gDNA with physical treatm
