Lithium-ion batteries with ever-increasing energy densities are needed for batteries for advanced devices and all-electric vehicles. Silicon has been highlighted as a promising anode material because of its superior specific capacity. During repeated charge-discharge cycles, silicon undergoes huge volume changes. This limits cycle life via particle pulverization and an unstable electrode-electrolyte interface, especially when the particle sizes are in the micrometer range. We show that the incor
Silicon (Si) anode is among the most promising candidates for the next-generation high-capacity electrodes in Li-ion batteries owing to its unparalleled theoretical capacity (4200 mA h g-1 for Li4.4Si) that is approximately 10 times higher than that of commercialized graphitic anodes (372 mA h g-1 for LiC6). The battery community has witnessed substantial advances in research on new polymeric binders for silicon anodes mainly due to the shortcomings of
We report a novel dimeric boradiazaindacene dye which can be converted in one step to an efficient resonance energy transfer (RET) dyad. In addition, if this modification is done with appropriate ligands, RET can be coupled to ion sensing. The utility of this approach is demonstrated in a highly selective, emission ratiometric chemosensor for Ag(I).
Boradiazaindacene dyads designed as energy transfer casettes can be modified to signal cation concentrations ratiometrically. If the energy transfer efficiency is increased via changing spectral overlap on cation binding, an enhancement of emission signal ratios can be obtained. A larger range of ratios results in highly improved sensitivity to analyte concentrations. We demonstrate this approach in a de novo design of a novel and highly selective ratiometric chemosensor for Hg(II) ions.
A covalent triazine framework (CTF) with embedded polymeric sulfur and a high sulfur content of 62 wt % was synthesized under catalyst- and solvent-free reaction conditions from 1,4-dicyanobenzene and elemental sulfur. Our synthetic approach introduces a new way of preparing CTFs under environmentally benign conditions by the direct utilization of elemental sulfur. The homogeneous sulfur distribution is due to the in situ formation of the framework structure, and chemical sulfur impregnation wit
Porous organic polymers (POPs) have long been considered as prime candidates for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture, separation, and conversion. Especially their permanent porosity, structural tunability, stability and relatively low cost are key factors in such considerations. Whereas heteratom-rich microporous networks as well as their amine impregnation/functionalization have been actively exploited to boost the CO2 affinity of POPs, recently, the focus has shifted to engineer
Manipulating and controlling the self-organisation of small collections of molecules, as an alternative to investigating individual molecules, has motivated researchers bent on processing and storing information in molecular electronic devices (MEDs). Although numerous ingenious examples of single-molecule devices have provided fundamental insights into their molecular electronic properties, MEDs incorporating hundreds to thousands of molecules trapped between wires in two-dimensional arrays wit
[reaction, structure: see text] We report a unimolecular system functioning as a combinatorial logic circuit for half-subtractor. The emission characteristics can be modulated by chemical inputs, and when followed at two different wavelengths, two functionally integrated logic gates XOR and INHIBIT are obtained. Both logic gates function in the emission mode, and with very large differences in the signal intensity allowing unequivocal assignment of logic-0 and logic-1.
The millipede's extraordinary adhesion provides a design principle for silicon anode binders with emphasis on the superstructure and electrostatic charge.
Aryl-substituted boratriazaindacenes (Aza-Bodipy's) are a new class of dyes with long wavelength absorption and emissions. We now report the first application of these dyes in metal ion sensing. 2-Pyridyl substituents at positions 1 and 7 create a well-defined pocket for metal ion binding. The chemosensor described here is selective for Hg(II) ions, and both absorption and emission spectra display large changes that would allow ratiometric sensing. [reaction: see text].
Abstract In order to address the challenges associated with lithium–sulfur batteries with high energy densities, various approaches, including advanced designs of sulfur composites, electrolyte engineering, and functional separators, are lately introduced. However, most approaches are effective for sulfur cathodes with limited sulfur contents, i.e., <80 wt%, imposing a significant barrier in realizing high energy densities in practical cell settings. Here, elemental sulfur‐mediated synthesis
Porous cationic polymers (PCPs) with surface areas up to 755 m(2) g(-1) bearing positively charged viologen units in their backbones and different counteranions have been prepared. We have demonstrated that by simply varying counteranions both gas sorption and catalytic properties of PCPs can be tuned for metal-free capture and conversion of CO2 into value-added products such as cyclic carbonates with excellent yields.
Covalent or Noncovalent? Systematic investigation of polymeric binders incorporating Meldrum's acid reveals most critical binder properties for silicon -anodes in lithium ion batteries, that is self-healing effect facilitated by a series of noncovalent interactions.
Although being incorporated in commercial lithium-ion batteries for a while, the weight portion of silicon monoxide (SiOx , x ≈ 1) is only less than 10 wt% due to the insufficient cycle life. Along this line, polymeric binders that can assist in maintaining the mechanical integrity and interfacial stability of SiOx electrodes are desired to realize higher contents of SiOx . Herein, a pyrene-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-polyrotaxane (PR) supramolecular network is repo
