While numerous studies have investigated body image, including body weight perception, most of which have focused on adolescents or young women, few studies have attempted to evaluate body weight perceptions in adult women according to age groups. This study was conducted to investigate the accuracy of self-perceived weight and actual body mass index (BMI) values among adult Korean women according to age. We used data from the 2016 Korean Study of Women's Health Related Issues, a population-base
As part of an ongoing study aimed at identifying the anti-complement active compound from the flower buds of Daphne genkwa, ten flavonoids, one biscoumarin and one amide were isolated. Their structures were identified from spectroscopic and physicochemical data as genkwanin 5-O-beta-d-primveroside (1), apigenin 7-O-beta-d-glucuronide (2), genkwanin 5-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside (3), apigenin 5-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside (4), genkwanin (5), apigenin (6), luteolin 7-methyl ether (7), luteolin (8), daph
Our findings suggest that the KoBCRAT is a better tool for predicting the risk of breast cancer in Korean women, especially urban women.
Nine lignans and two butanolides were isolated from the stem bark of Machilus thunbergii and their structures were identified as machilin A (1), licarin B (2), zuonin B (3), macelignan (4), secoisolancifolide (5), isolancifolide (6), oleiferin C (7), meso-dihydroguaiaretic acid (8), licarin A (9), machilin F (10), and nectandrin B (11) by spectroscopic means. These compounds were assessed for their abilities to activate a caspase-3 activity in human promyeloid leukemic HL-60 cells. The intracell
This study was performed to identify factors associated with screening for diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy. Data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2007 and 2009 were analyzed. Of 24,871 participants, 1,288 patients diagnosed with diabetes at ≥30 years of age were included. 36.3% received screening for diabetic retinopathy, and 40.5% received screening for diabetic nephropathy during the previous year. Patients living in rural areas, those with less edu
FCs with anxiety or depression were at high risk of suicide. Interventions to enhance social support and to improve perceived QOL may help prevent suicide and manage suicidal ideation in FCs with anxiety or depression.
Despite inherent uncertainties in the risk factors for breast and ovarian cancers, we suggest that appropriate long-term control of modifiable reproductive factors could reduce breast and ovarian cancer incidences and their related burdens by 16.7% and 81.9%, respectively.
This study confirmed an increased risk of breast cancer with greater breast density in Korean women which was consistent regardless of BI-RADS assessment category, time interval after initially non-recall results, and menopausal status.
These recent trends in ovarian cancer incidence and mortality may be partly attributed to gradual westernizing of life styles and to changes in socio-demographic behavior factors. In particular, the increasing trend in ovarian cancer mortality in Korea may be attributed to a real rise in mortality as well as, in part, a decline in misclassification bias related to an increase in the proportion of deaths confirmed by physician diagnosis.
This study analyzed the sex difference in the effect of smoking exposure on lung cancer in terms of absolute and relative risks despite the increasing lung cancer incidence in Asian female never smokers. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on individuals aged 40-79 years who participated in the national health screening program in 2007 and 2008 with linkage to the Korea Central Cancer Registry records. We evaluated sex differences in the age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) of lung cance
This study investigated the prevalence of smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical activity in cancer survivors and examined the sociodemographic factors affecting these health-related behaviors. We used data from the 4th and 5th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2007 and 2012, which identified 1153 cancer cases and 36,451 people without a history of cancer ≥20 years of age. We used a structured questionnaire to obtain information concerning cancer diagno
