Alternative splicing has recently emerged as a major mechanism of regulation in the human genome, occurring in perhaps 40-60% of human genes. Thus, microarray studies of functional regulation could, in principle, be extended to detect not only the changes in the overall expression of a gene, but also changes in its splicing pattern between different tissues. However, since changes in the total expression of a gene and changes in its alternative splicing can be mixed in complex ways among a set o
Larger dorsal muscle group muscle size is associated with improved post-transplantation outcomes. The muscle is easier to measure and may represent a clinically relevant postoperative risk factor.
The combined transconjunctival and transcaruncular approach results in excellent outcomes in terms of prevention of postoperative enophthalmos of the large medial wall fracture without substantial complications. The far posterior medial volume may not contribute significantly to the development of posttraumatic enophthalmos.
The prevalence of visual impairment was demonstrated to be higher while that of blindness was similar to previous population studies in Asia or U.S. Sociodemographic disparities are present in the prevalence of visual impairment and more targeted efforts are needed to promote vision screening in high risk groups.
The level of VEGF in aqueous humor was significantly higher in the failure group after the Ahmed glaucoma implantation compared with the success group. Our results imply that VEGF may play a role in determining surgical success after Ahmed valve implantation in patients with NVG.
Poor initial VA, the presence of a disrupted IS/OS junction or a thin fovea on preoperative SD-OCT predicted poor vision outcome after LMH surgery.
The arthropod Down syndrome cell adhesion molecule (Dscam) gene can generate tens of thousands of protein isoforms via combinatorial splicing of numerous alternative exons encoding immunoglobulin variable domains organized into three clusters referred to as the exon 4, 6, and 9 clusters. Dscam protein diversity is important for nervous system development and immune functions. We have performed extensive phylogenetic analyses of Dscam from 20 arthropods (each containing between 46 and 96 alternat
Small RHs in peripheral areas may require aggressive treatment because they respond well to treatment. In larger RHs, staged treatment could reduce treatment-related complications. Transpupillary thermotherapy could be an effective method in tumor regression for moderate-to-large-sized RHs showing tumor regression rate of 70%.
Resveratrol may have therapeutic value in the management of diseases involving pathological neovascularization.
There was a correlation between a thickened choroid, temporal to the foveal centre, with the severity of myopic components in normal eyes. Topographical changes might be induced by stretching of the choroid and sclera towards a temporal direction with eyeball elongation.
Optic disk melanocytoma in the Korean population tends to be superiorly located in the optic disk, and visual prognosis was excellent. Periodic ocular examination is warranted because 57% of patients were estimated to show tumor enlargement by 8 years of follow-up.
