Few methods are available to regenerate articular cartilage defects in patients with osteoarthritis. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of articular cartilage regeneration by a novel medicinal product composed of allogeneic human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs). Patients with Kellgren-Lawrence grade 3 osteoarthritis and International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS) grade 4 cartilage defects were enrolled in this clinical trial. The stem cell-based medicina

To date, several studies have investigated the chondrogenic potential of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs); however, the preclinical studies are still limited in numbers with various results. In parallel, in the past several years, the cartilage regeneration potential of hUCB-MSCs with a hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel composite have been investigated and remarkable results in rat and rabbit models have been attained. (These experimental results are currently in

Osteoarthritis leads to articular cartilage wear, and newer therapies are aimed at slowing this degeneration. Growth factors and cytokines influence cartilage formation, and researchers are studying their use on cartilage regeneration in osteoarthritis. One method uses genetically engineered cells to deliver growth factors to damaged cartilage. This technique utilizes transforming growth factor-β proteins in modified chondrocytes to stimulate cartilage growth via an intra-articular injection. We
Our results indicate that MSCs with different characteristics can be isolated from all layers of term placenta. These finding suggest that it is necessary to appropriately select MSCs from different placental layers for successful and consistent outcomes in clinical applications.
This study was carried out to assess the feasibility of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) in articular cartilage repair and to further determine a suitable delivering hydrogel in a rat model. Critical sized full thickness cartilage defects were created. The hUCB-MSCs and three different hydrogel composites (hydrogel A; 4% hyaluronic acid/30% pluronic (1:1, v/v), hydrogel B; 4% hyaluronic acid, and hydrogel C; 4% hyaluronic acid/30% pluronic/chitosan (1:1:2, v/

We aimed to obtain anthropometric data on Korean knees and to compare these with data on commonly available total knee arthroplasties (TKAs). The dimensions of the femora and tibiae of 1168 knees were measured intra-operatively. The femoral components were found to show a tendency toward mediolateral (ML) under-coverage in small femurs and ML overhang in the large femurs. The ML under-coverage was most prominent for the small prostheses. The ML/anteroposterior (ML/AP) ratio of Korean tibiae was
