This review focuses on the imaging applications of metasurfaces. These optical elements provide a unique platform to control light; not only do they have a reduced size and complexity compared to conventional imaging systems but they also enable novel imaging modalities, such as functional-imaging techniques. This review highlights the development of metalenses, from their basic principles, to the achievement of achromatic and tunable lenses, and metasurfaces implemented in functional optical im
A hyperlens is a super-resolution optical imaging device based on unique hyperbolic dispersions making the sub-diffraction-limited information on objects propagate to the far-field. Here, we propose a new device consisting of a 4-inch wafer-scale spherical hyperlens array that allows high-throughput and easy-to-handle real-time biomolecular imaging. With this proposed device, we report the first experimental demonstration of real-time sub-diffraction-limited biomolecular imaging using a hyperlen
Broadband perfect absorbers have been intensively researched for decades because of their near-perfect absorption optical property that can be applied to diverse applications. Unfortunately, achieving large-scale and heat-tolerant absorbers has been remained challenging work because of costly and time-consuming lithography methods and thermolability of materials, respectively. Here, we demonstrate a thermally robust titanium nitride broadband absorber with >95% absorption efficiency in the visib
Chirality, the absence of mirror symmetry, is predominant in nature. The chiral nature of the electromagnetic field behaves differently with chiral matter for left circularly polarized and right circularly polarized light. The chiroptical behavior in the sensing of naturally occurring chiral objects is weak, and improving the chiroptical response enhances the chiral sensing platform. This review covers the fundamental concepts of chiral metasurfaces and various types of single- and multi-layered
Metasurfaces composed of artificially fabricated nano-sized structures have shown extraordinary potential for the precise control of light. Here, we demonstrate for the first time, a metasurface application to reduce the axial size of the point spread function in laser scanning microscopy. The all-dielectric metasurface has wavelength selectivity over the whole visible range, and confinement of the excitation point spread function of the electromagnetic field. These two unique features allow the
Metasurfaces consist of artificially fabricated nanostructures and have shown potential for optical devices due to their precise control of light. Here, we demonstrate a metasurface application to improve the lateral resolution of the optical system in fluorescence microscopy based on patterned illumination. We designed and fabricated all-dielectric metasurfaces to have various encoded illumination patterns in the visible range. Super-resolution images were acquired using the designed metasurfac
This paper proposes a feedback-linearization-based control algorithm for multirotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The feedback linearization scheme is highly efficient for considering nonlinearity between the rotational and translational motion of multirotor UAVs. We also propose a dynamic equation that reflects the aerodynamic effects of the vehicles; the equation’s parameters can be determined through curve fitting using actual flight data. We derive the feedback linearization controller fr
The surface quality of the stainless steel affects the efficiency of flexible photovoltaics. Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is a finishing process that is used to prepare substrates for electronic devices. The CMP slurry composition is an important factor because additives in the slurry generally improve the polishing performance. However, it is limited to find the optimum conditions for the slurry by only experimental approaches. Thus, this study uses electrochemical analysis and friction
A variety of applications using miniaturized optical lenses can be found among rapidly evolving technologies. From smartphones and cameras in our daily life to augmented and virtual reality glasses for the recent trends of the untact era, miniaturization of optical lenses permits the development of many types of compact devices. Here, we highlight the importance of ultrasmall and ultrathin lens technologies based on metamaterials and metasurfaces. Focusing on hyperlenses and metalenses that can
The spin Hall effect of light, a phenomenon characterized by the transverse and spin dependent splitting of light at an optical interface, is highly promising for collecting precise quantitative data from interfaces and stands as an appealing option for improving precision metrology. This high level of precision is attributed to the principles of weak measurement. Since its conceptual introduction, the spin Hall effect of light has been empirically observed through weak measurement techniques, a
Abstract Localization of light spots in a given image is a common task in digital processing but is challenging in analog. Herein, a periodic nonlocal metasurface that has an optical transfer function defined in reciprocal space is proposed to resolve this issue. Assuming an ideal optical transfer function that encodes that of a local lens, the selective spot size reduction of incident Gaussian beams and sharpening of a patterned incidence with a Gaussian line shape are demonstrated. A realistic
The use of super-resolution imaging to overcome the diffraction limit of conventional microscopy has attracted the interest of researchers in biology and nanotechnology. Although near-field scanning microscopy and superlenses have improved the resolution in the near-field region, far-field imaging in real-time remains a significant challenge. Recently, the hyperlens, which magnifies and converts evanescent waves into propagating waves, has emerged as a novel approach to far-field imaging. Here,
